observer
IF, and it's a big "if"; everyone (ordinary folk) bought British, our imports would reduce. Providing, we increased our exports at the same time, we should have a trade surplus to pay our way out of debt.
Bazj
but the average Joe will not or cannot afford to buy British....
Peter T
Not many fridges, freezers, washing machines, kettles, toasters etc made in the UK.
Cleopatra
As, what appears to be the norm, this topice seems to have gone off at a tangent so to bring it back in line - Â It appears that it is going to cost you people 10,000 pounds per week or 500,000 pounds per annum to keep Qatada under security in the UK. But would that ensure he could do no harm? I think not. Seems his 18 year old son is following in his dad's footsteps! Chances are Qatada snr could do his foul work through Qatada jnr unless preventative measures are put into place.

observer
60 Special Branch Officers working 24/7 to watch one bloke - yer couldn't make it up. Cheaper to dump him over Jordan - without a parachute.
Dizzy
Why is everyone worrying as Downing Street have stated 'We will take all measures necessary to protect the public.' Â Are they for real or what ????
Bazj
So do these necessary measures include putting him down like the dog he is or maybe just sending him back to Jordan and sod the frogs and the Brussels nazis????
Cleopatra
Apparantly he can be legally deported back to Jordan regardless of what the ECHR says but Mrs May is flapping about and seemingly incapable of issuing the order. Talks are being held in Jordan re his deportation. Britain wants Jordan's promise that he will not be hurt in anyway. At least his momma wants him back home and says he's been gone too long, bless her!
observer
Interesting prog by Andrew Niell tonight about the ECHR: seems it was the brainchild of a Tory, none other than Winston Churchill; although no doubt inspired by a desire to prevent another holocaust or state repression by the USSR. Interesting also, that all signatories get a Judge on the ECHR; which includes the Russians; and most members (to varying degrees) ignore it's rulings, with the notable exception of the UK, which seems to take such Treaties literally. Lt Kije
You would be correct in saying that some of the old eastern block countries ignore it rulings Obs, but not most. It was a good program, watched it after the football.

observer
The guy who pursued the quest for prisoners right to vote, was on too - seems he axed his landlady to death and served 25years for murder, took a law degree - then took the British Establishment all the way to the ECHR and won. Now, if the UK Gov don't comply, we can expect a raft of compensation claims from prisoners - yer couldn't make it up!
Lt Kije
Funny you did not mention Spycatcher Obs, The ECHR allowed the British public to read the book, after Maggie tried to hush it up.

Lt Kije
Not going off at a tangent, Obs as usual is only putting forward negatives. The spycatcher saga is an example of a possative, the act enabled the UK to no what the rest of the world already new. I had no idea Baz that this thread was just for slagging off.
