observer
The latest from scientific researchers is - if you sit down more than 11 hours per day, your not likely to live very long. So this can be added to the long list of things not to do in order to extend your life span. Then on the other hand, the "experts" are telling us, that the number of folk reaching 100 years old is increasing. Who pays these idiots to spend such time on trivial research?! Does that include the amount of time sleeping (yes, obs I do realise that you said 'sit' not 'lie' but it may just be a generalisation) if not than that would result in someone being off their feet for 17 to 20hrs a day, not really surprised that it would shorten your life!.
Lt Kije
Could be the people living past 100 have not been sitting around for 11 hours aday, and less ans less people are sitting around.

Dizzy
Be my guest Lt K as someone might aswell benefit from it  Note: I'm not a complete lazy arse by the way as I do spend a lot of time running around like a headless chicken in between sitting down though.  Crikey I wonder if that balances it out or maybe the combination of the two reduces my life span even more.  Is ther a doctor on here
Bazj
why are the doctors and experts bothering to try and extend everyones life so much?? There won't be enough room for everyone if things carry on anyway; without keeping the wrinklies going into their 100's!
sadako
I couldn't imagine sitting for up to 11 hours a day. That would drive me crazy.
observer
Go and have a lie down then, Sadk! It's costing society an arm and a leg now to keep the wrinklies going, and the older they get, the more dependent - so perhaps a cost-benefit analysis hasn't been done?! Cleopatra
But is excercise really good for you? In the Uk I regularly saw joggers jogging to keep fit and I would wonder why? They looked anything but fit red faced, sweaty, panting for breath and struggling to keep going. Looked to me like they could be jogging themselves into an early grave. asperity
Everything in moderation Cleo. And I think jogging is just as bad as doing anything to excess. Just live life at the pace that suits you and you will live as long as you are supposed to. No two people are the same after all.
Cleopatra
I have often said the same thing myself. What is good for one is not necessarily good for another because we are all different so it shouldn't be assumed that because excercise or diet is suitable for some it is suitable for everyone. Cleopatra
Seems that excercise really isn't good for you. Recently Patrice Muamba collapsed while playing football. Nineteen year old Steven Buckley, a Warrington lad, collapsed while playing football. And Chris Ralph collapsed and died while playing football. observer
Which could have happened as a response to any extreme exercise - hence the need for medical screening for everyone.
Peter T
Perhaps it says more about the health of the modern generation.
asperity
Don't we already have health screening? I've had regular medicals throughout my working life as a necessity.
observer
Only in some industries Asp; not generally throughout the population; perhaps some form of medical MOT would suffice, say every 10 years?
asperity
I have to have regular medicals, as do all Merchant Seamen, just to keep our jobs. I'm sure the rest of the workforce must have to submit to some form of medical to keep their jobs??
observer
Think most "proper" jobs require full medicals on entry, some will require periodic medicals, but this in no way covers a large portion of the population. Health screening of everyone, would identify probs early and cost less to treat.
Lt Kije
I have to have medicals as well, but the vast majority don't Asp.
