Cleopatra
Golly gosh....! Never seen the house of commons so full before. It was standing room only for the same sex marriage vote. The ayes have it by 400 votes to 175.
asperity
What a waste of time and effort. To be honest who gives a damn? And is it any business of government who marries who and where and when?
Dizzy
Golly gosh....! Never seen the house of commons so full before. It was standing room only for the same sex marriage vote. observer
Pity they can't all turn up for the serious stuff, or is all that consigned to Brussels nowadays?

Cleopatra
What a waste of time and effort. To be honest who gives a damn? And is it any business of government who marries who and where and when? Well apparantly it is the governments business. As for who gives a damn.... a few hundred thousand gay people do. asperity
And why is it the business of government?
Evil Sid
Avery good question asp. It certainly makes you wonder doesn't it
Freeborn John
It's a pity they don't pack the house out like that when the future of the country is being discussed...
Bazj
They don't have to go outside for a fag in the house of commons
asperity
Of course the debate and vote wouldn't happen to have anything to do with this would it?: https://wcd.coe.int//ViewDoc.jsp?Ref=CM/Rec%282010%295&Language=lanEnglish&Ver=original&BackColorInternet=C3C3C3&BackColorIntranet=EDB021&BackColorLogged=F5D383 It's strange that MPs are allowed a vote on this but not a vote on our membership of the EUSSR. Peter T
The wording of these things is quite frightening. Places like the UK will take it as Gospel and try to implement it straight-away rather than drip feed some of it.
observer
The Gay lobby are just out to prove a point: but I'm not quite sure what "the point" is? Civil Partnerships provide equivalent legal spousal protections already; and there's no compulsion on the main Religions to provide "marriage" ceremonies - so basically, we've gone from civil partnerships to "marriages" in the local register office or by some pseudo-religious cult. Meanwhile, the Country's wallowing in the economic doldrums - yer just couldn't make it up.
Lt Kije
Asp The Council of Europe is not the EU.
asperity
Excuse me? Just where in my post did I say it was? I think you're seeing things Lt Kije. Or perhaps it's paranoia
Lt Kije
Excuse you, Why post a link to the council of Europe, and the harp on about a vote about the EUSSR, ? As you agree they are not the same
asperity
My comment was about MPs being allowed to vote on unimportant (to the vast majority of the electorate) matters and not on important things like the future of the country and its relationship with that bloated bureaucracy in Brussels. Obviously too subtle for you Lt Kije.
Lt Kije
To subtle, you post a link to the Council of Europe, and then take a swipe at the EU, you might as well have posted a link on sausages , the two are not the same
asperity
Paranoid Lt Kije. I was taking a swipe at the government and parliament not at the EUSSR. Your problem is that even a mention of the EUSSR is enough to get your hackles rising. If I said I thought the EUSSR was the best thing since sliced bread you would think I was being sarcastic.
Lt Kije
Why post a link that has nothing to do with your swipe at the EU, as I said you might as well have posted one on sausages. As sausages are about as relevant as your link to your swipe.
Bazj
If I said I thought the EUSSR was the best thing since sliced bread you would think I was being sarcastic. I would too
safeway60
Cameron has managed to alienate half of his own MP's over this issue...Perhaps he isn't as clever as everybody thinks he is.
observer
Think perhaps he's trying to replicate Bliar's "modernisation" of his Party; dump his core support (and take them for granted) and appeal to a younger but more fickle centre ground, giving him the edge in the marginals?
asperity
I certainly don't think he's clever. In fact he comes accross as clueless and out of touch with reality.
Evil Sid
So he is a typical politician then
