Lt Kije
Lord Ashcroft does not pay Tax in the UK He is the Tory Party's biggest donor Is it right that someone donating to a political party is a non domiciled in the UK Discuss
Dizzy
Doesn't bother me as it's upto him how he choses to waste.. sorry spend... his money
Bazj
Labour have two non-dom donors (which they conveniently seem to forget about when shouting about Ashcroft) and then you have the Lib Dems who took a 2.5 million pound donation from a man who was eventually convicted of fraud. No one knew where the cash he donated came from and the Libs are refusing to pay it back because they have spent it!! At least that's what Chris Huhme said today anyway! They are all as guilty as each other Kije when it comes to taking dodgy donations..

Lt Kije
Not at all Baz Didn't Mr Ashcroft sign an under taking that he would be resident and pay taxes in the UK when he became a lord, In fact he had to sign it or he could not have become a lord And how much influence does Mr Ahscroft have over the party, I suggest this is bad because he is a non dom, And what does it say about the tory leader when he has not got the guts to tackle Mr Ashcroft over his under taking. He only chose to make it public as a newspaper were using the freedom of information act to out him.
Dizzy
Didn't Alistair Darling (Labour) pave the way in 2008 for a fixed annual charge of ?30,000 payable by long-term residents in the UK who were claiming non-domicile status
Bazj
Well I don't see what the fuss is about personally. We welcome with open arms; a bloke who is a billionaire Russian and just happens to buy a football club with money from heaven knows where. Ashcroft doesn't pay UK tax on money earned abroad.... what's wrong with that? Just because some of the places he makes his money don't tax him, doesn't entitle Brown and Darling to take it instead. I think everybody; if they were in his position with regards to his wealth and monmey would do the same
observer
Think what shows us, is that ALL the mainstream Parties havn't learnt a thing from the Parliamentary sleeze and corruption revelations, and that political parties are basically the whores of the rich - anybodies for a few more quid - to fund even more leaflets - to be consigned to the waste bin - unread. Let's hope, that like the Premier League, bankruptcy will eventually burst their bubble.

LymmParent
He avoids income tax by not living here. What's that got to do with political donations? He earns his money legitimately, hasn't broken any laws, and his money is not being used for anything dodgy. Where's the bit I'm supposed to be finding sleazy? wolfie
I think there's a difference with where you live and where you declare you live. Ashcroft lives in London but declares that his main residence is in Belize. In 1999 he was rejected as a member of the Lords by the political honours scrutiny committee, a rejection he believed was partly based on his residency at the time. The following year he was admitted to the Lords as a Conservative working peer after he made a promise to become a permanent resident of the UK. William Hague, Tory leader at the time gave written assurances that Ashcroft would return to the UK and pay "tens of millions a year in tax" when he accepted his peerage. Lt Kije
Why was he not made to live up to the assurances he made 10 years ago, Why didn't the leadership make him If nothing else the leadership appear weak. This man is pumping millions into marginals, He uses his own staff to do it not Tory party employees Is he running is own agenda, as the tory party are to weak to confront him. A person who has so much control of a political party should live and pay taxes in the UK.

harry hayes
Good luck to the man and his money which seems to be honestly accrued. At least he believes in something. Why should he pay tax if he doesn't have to - most of us would do the same. How much do the unions give to Labour? - not all union members belong to that party. wolfie
How much do the unions give to Labour? - not all union members belong to that party. Bazj
No, but but only those union members who agree to give a political levy do so. When I was last a member of a union (blimey that's a lonnnnnng time ago!) there was no choice and you were never asked Mind you, Kinnock was Labour leader then and he never stood a chance of winning no matter how much money the unions threw at Labour! A) he was Welsh He was a ginger! Game over really..... mind you he has gone on to be quite influential in how the UK is run during his time as an EU top dog, along with his wife, kids, dog and everyone else he could fit on the EU gravy train.... so who was the loser after all? Lt Kije
Why did the Tory leadership not deal with this earlier
observer
Think your all missing the point - "he who pays the piper, calls the tune" - so like football clubs, political parties become merely a richman's toy (or of wealthy interest groups) - not exactly democratic or accountable to "the people". There is simply no need for this fiscal arms race over electioneering; as exposure to "public" scrutiny could be provided free to candidates via the media at both national and local level.
