observer
A question for Asp I suppose. - If yachts carry a GPS transponder, why haven't the Coast Guard traced it's position? Would the container ship that spotted an upturned vessel, have signalled it's position? Can the GPS device be transferred to a survival dinghy? asperity
Here is a report from gCaptain about finding the capsized yacht: http://gcaptain.com/maersk-containership-finds-overturned-hull-sign-missing-sailors/ An EPIRB battery has a limited life, but is required to last a minimum of 48 hours. As you can see from the report the initial search was called off after 53 hours. Either the crew all perished when the yacht capsized, or they got away in a liferaft which has drifted away from the area. The weather conditions were reported to be very bad. Bill
It never ceases to amaze me that they can tag a shark and track it half way round the world and yet similar stuff for boats and planes is almost useless. Bill
Bazj
Looks like they have located the wrecked yacht
Evil Sid
It has been confirmed that it is the missing yacht and the life raft was still on board but no sign of the crew sadly.

Davy51
Apparently the keel had come off the hull allowing the boat to be blown over, just makes you wonder at the sea worthiness of the yacht. Were there any other faults ?
Dizzy
How come if, as some reports say, the wreckage had been spotted last Saturday (ie a day after it went missing) but it has taken until now for a swimmer to check it out and confirm it is their yacht ? Bill
I think the ship that origionally found the yacht was a cargo vessle so probably wouldn't have had anyone onboard able to do that plus the weather in the area back then was very stormy. observer
It would seem reasonable to assume that the crew were washed overboard when the vessel was overturned in the storm; once in the cold waters of the north Atlantic, without their life raft; survival time would be counted in minutes.
