Bill
Got a bit of a queue next week with people wanting to try out my car so fingers crossed I’ll soon have a bit more space in the garage. In the four and a half years I’ve had the car, it’s only been treated to the odd hand car wash, and I’ve never bothered waxing or polishing it. So, I spent a few days preparing and detailing the car to try and get it into showroom condition but the glossier I got the thing, the more the minor stone chips seemed to show. ☹ Me being me, I think I’m a honest person and hate to think I’d ever sell something only to find the buyer is disappointed if they ever discover something wrong that I didn’t know about, so at the last service, I paid for a full inspection to identify any potential issues. It turned out there were some that weren’t serious but ideally needed attention, so I had these fixed at quite some expense. So, having done my best, it came as a bit of a shock when one prospective buyer suggested I was massively overcharging as he’d done an online check on the car, and it came back with a valuation 12K below my asking price. This got me worried, and I began to wonder if the car had some hidden history that I was unaware of, as that would affect the valuation. So, I paid a tenner to the same online checking company and thank God, it came back perfectly clear of issues and with a valuation close to mine; Phew! Having written this guy off as a chancer or tyre kicker, it was nice to receive an email from him, profusely apologising for his mistake having entered the wrong registration. Now he’s keen enough to travel all the way down from Glasgow to just view the car. The day after that, I’ve got someone driving up from Essex, and later today there’s a guy from Leigh wanting to try it. Fingers crossed! Bill
You can uncross them now Con, it’s sold. The Essex guy rang me this morning and offered almost the full asking price without even seeing the car. I was ready to accept that but had to tell him I had someone else coming at 2pm and I had no way of contacting him. Anyway, the guy from Leigh took the car for a quick spin and immediately offered the full asking price. 20K already in the bank (daily limit) with the balance by tomorrow. Could have asked for considerably more but didn’t want the hassle of haggling. Result! Bill 😊

Bill
Bugger! Now I’ve got no car at all because the Alfa snapped a front spring in Liverpool yesterday and is undrivable. The car’s seventeen years old and this is the first time it’s broken down and left me stuck which must be a bit of a record for an Alfa Romeo. 😊 Fortunately, the spring snapped with a huge bang just as I was pulling into my son’s driveway so at least it’s off the road. I called in at a couple of local garages as all the Alfa specialists were closed until Monday but as expected neither wanted to get involved with such an old obscure car as parts are hard to come by. Bill
Yippee. I’ve finally got my car back this weekend, but I had to get it picked up an taken to my regular specialist garage in Sandbach. My AA policy only covered moving the car up to 15 miles and they quoted me £280 to get it there. It turned out that the front spring hadn’t snapped as I suspected, and it was just the shock absorber and it’s mounting. But it’s never that straight forward with an Alfa and a full inspection showed that both of the back springs had broken and needed to be replaced. Throw in an oil top up, a new pair of wipers and the trasportatin cost and the bill came to £786. If that’s my only repair cost for the year then I’m happy. Bill
Well now my beloved old Alfa has also been sold for a song. Almost brought a tear to my eye to see it disappearing down the road after owning it for more than 18 years. I’d given it a good clean and polish beforehand so it looked like it had just come out of the showroom as you can see here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbe7iQl8hf4 Bill 😊
