Observer II
Is our political system, our unwritten constitution, bankrupt ? We have a House of Commons with over 600 Members, each receiving over £80k pa, which supports a two party duopoly, that ignores the majority of people outside the Westminster bubble, by ignoring fundemental issues, while getting bogged down with trivia such as trans wars. We have a House of Lords with over 800 unelected members, each receiving £300 per day for signing on, pursuing agendas that are elitist and alien to the majority of citizens. The one time, when the opinion of the population was directly tested, the EU Referendum; gave a true voice to public opinion, but the political establishment has failed to deliver on that vote, despite it being reinforced at the 2019 General Election. Perhaps reform needs to start with a root and branch modernisation of our political system, before it can begin to address the fundemental issues we face a Nation ? Evil Sid
as long as being a politician is seen as a career and not a vocation then there will be no change in the system.
Bill
There’s an argument that rules and laws that evolve over centuries shouldn’t be dismantled because they don’t fit with current thinking. Equally, “That’s the way we’ve always done things” could be argued as the reason we never seem to get things done. Given everything these days seems to be going online, could we ever see the situation where MPs are replaced by artificial intelligence? Just think, endless hours of waffle reduced to a couple of milliseconds 😊 Trouble is turkeys don’t vote for Christmas. Bill 😊
Confused52
Bill, AI is almost always implemented by taking what is already done it terms of making decisions and automating the process of inference that made humans arrive at the correct decision. Therefore using using AI in politics is more of the same by definition. The endless waffle is the very point of Parliament - its in the name! Bill
My suggestion might have been a bit tongue in cheek Con but who really knows what the future holds long term? You only need to look at the way technology is being used in places like schools, then it’s not too hard to imagine that teacher numbers could gradually be reduced. Another good example can be found at the doctors, where by all accounts we’re already halfway there with online triage before virtual appointments. ☹ There’s never a wait to see Dr Alexa. 😊 Bill 😊
Evil Sid
The cartoon the Jetsons is getting to be more a reality than ever. work conferences via zoom. doctors on your pc. face time calls to our friends and family. robots cleaning the house and delivering goods. even flying cars are getting closer to being rolled out. all the things that the creators of the Jetsons had in their show.
