Observer II
Seems the EU has got something right imo; they're about to ban the twice yearly routine of putting the clocks forward or back. Never really understood why clocks have to be altered, when it would be simpler to just start an hour early or late, instead.

asperity
It's well known that the extra hour of sunshine in summer causes your curtains to fade
Stallard12
The reason they do it in the States is so that kids catch school buses in the light each morning. I always understood that in the U.K. It was to benefit farmers - don't know how. Everybody here hates it too.
Observer II
Yes Tex; but there's no need to alter the clocks - just start or finish an hour early or late - simple.
Evil Sid
I blame Benjamin Franklin it was is idea. (according to some sources) the guy who first proposed it for the uk wondered why peoples blinds were still closed when the sun was up and deemed it a waste of daylight. Germany was the first to actually adopt it as a method followed by the uk in 1916. so quite a recent thing really. Obs it is bad enough people rushing to work late as it is with the clocks changing imagine how much worse it would be trying to figure out if you are late or not and what time you should be starting or finishing. working out the wage bill would need a master mathematician with a degree in advanced topographical calculus. Don't follow that Sid: People have to remember to put their clocks forward or back, twice every year. No change of clocks would merely require them to get up an hour early or lie in for an hour - not difficult, is it ?
asperity
Like the weather, this is just another thing for the British to complain about. On board ships at sea sailing east or west around the world clocks are adjusted most days, half an hour or an hour depending on the ship's speed. So twice a year is nothing. When you fly long distances tou have to adjust your clock by several hours in one go.
Observer II
But that's conditioned by longitude, not worrying about kids going to school in the dark -
asperity
Obs, in Scotland in midwinter the kids go to school in the dark and come home in the dark whatever happens to the clocks. It's a problem manufactured by people with nothing useful to do.
Observer II
Simple answer to that one too: shorter school day in Winter, longer in Summer - sorted !
Confused52
If the school days round here get any shorter there will be hardly any point them going at all!
