Observer II
With Gov subsidies to energy users, £400pa to homes, plus 6 months of cover for buisiness', then with proposed tax cuts the Gov coffers will be depleted, so where's the money coming from, and more to the point, who's going to eventually pay for it ? Covid has already cost us £400billion, which will now cost even more in future interest rates, so it's down to future generations to sort the debt. If this wasn't enough, Gov are throwing £billions at Ukraine, to keep them fighting and dying, meanwhile we face a Winter of precarious energy supply, and it's all down to cold war politics and the green net zero agenda. PS, Now we're being told that The El Nino will affect the gulf stream, causing a particulaly COLD Winter . 💀

Check the quality of the source on that one. It may be as definite as it gets hot in the tropics.
Observer II
I know, but it seems it does have an effect due to changes in air temperature, affecting ocean temps - 😑
Observer II
Given the threat to living standards will fall heaviest on the least well off, the moral and logical response would be to make those with the broadest backs bare the heaviest load. Alas, the Truss Gov has resurected the Reganomic myth that tax cuts to the rich will stimulate the economy through "trickle down", the reality is, that the rich won't be throwing their money about, but will invest it in ways to make even more money. The idea that somehow, they will increase their spending to fund employment further down the food chain, is a total con, by the CONservatives.
Confused52
The policies announced today are clearly intended to reassure business that they will be able to survives and keep paying the wages of their employees. Hence no rise in corporation tax big saving on National Insurance. The banker's bonuses thing is to make it more advantageous for bankers to base themselves in London than elsewhere and increase UK taxes back to where there were. The stamp duty cut is to stop the construction industry and the dependent supply of goods and services going. The say it is about growing GDP, and it does appear to be so. The party of envy have lauded every tax rise that have got us here. The change I really approve of is changing the way the cost of electricity is calculated so that we no longer give solar and wind the same price as the most expensive kw supplied to the grid when they keep claiming they are the cheapest. They aren't taxed on their windfall, but it has been massive and may well be greater overall than the fossil fuel profits from the North Sea. The cost of encouraging renewables at the consumer's expense has been enormous and has now become unsustainable. The left have encouraged this legalised theft organised by the EU rules and councils joined the gravy train. A train which Warrington residents may come to regret bitterly. Evil Sid
Seems the Germans have nationalised their gas. They have taken a 98.5% stake in Uniper (a Finnish company that supplies gas to Europe apparentlt) didn't take long did it.........
Observer II
Needs - must. If Putin shuts down totally the supply and we get a cold Winter, the Euro Politicians could be sacked. People have recognised the nonsense and self harm of the sanctions on Russia and the insanity of commitment to net zero, 70,000 protested in Prague, the Swedes have moved to the right, soon to be followed by the Italians. When the Autumn mud turns to Winter ice, Putin will no doubt launch his additional 300,000 troops to finally finish the job in Ukraine. Maybe the politicians will see sense and seek a negotiated settlement, which will give Russia what it wanted ? Meanwhile, on the energy front, Gov aspirations for fracking have fallen flat, so they need to open some coal mines and coal fired power stations, build storage capacity for N/Sea oil and gas, start building nuclear and drop all subsidies on "green" energy. Then perhaps we can all get back to normal. As for the budget, a small number of wealthy folk getting huge tax breaks won't boost the economy, better to circulate the cash to the Plebs who WILL spend it and revitalise the economy. 😑
Evil Sid
One of the things that i also spotted whilst trolling through the interweb was an article saying that the price for charging electric cars from public chargers was set to rise so much that it would be dearer than a tank of petrol. i also spotted a photo of a solar farm somewhere in the uk showing a filed full of solar panels with the dead grass underneath them. rather defeats the object of the exercise. meanwhile i am stocking up on empty jam jars to use with candles when the power cuts start.......😎
ninearches
The powers that be seem to be obsessed with putting solar panels on farmland. Why not plaster pre existing warehouses with the screens ?
Observer II
Why not forget wind and solar altogether, as they don't work without wind and sunshine; we must have some of the stormiest seas around the UK, with plenty of rainfall and river generation; so ideal for wave, tidal and hydro systems that would reduce flood risks ? While we practise self denial with net zero, China and India are still building coal fired power stations by the score.

That won't reduce prices much for consumers.
Observer II
Estuary barriers fitted with turbines, can catch river currents and tidal flows, help prevent storm surge flooding and provide cross river road routes.
