There are much more important things the RN could be doing; like preventing migrants crossing the Channel or EU fishermen poaching our fish. What is important, is that a RN vessel is deliberately baiting the bear, and as with all these type of incidents, accidents (deliberate or otherwise), can and do happen; leading to escalations. As for Putin, he secured the Crimea and will no doubt defend it, and imo there are more important things for the RN to be doing at the moment; than pretending to be, what they no longer are. These incursions by the West are designed to make a point, the point being, that we still recognise the sovereignty of the Ukraine over the Crimea, or freedom of navigation in the S/China sea. The problem is, that in trying to "make a point", all they achieve is the ratcheting up of hostilities and the ultimate sanction of war. This sort of thing has been going on since the end of WW2 by both sides. The Russians, if they were having an exercise on how to defeat a Carrier Task Force, will have been overjoyed to have the real thing to practice on 🤣.
