Putin said they fired warning shots, the RN denies it. So who do you believe? And if you actually think that the Russians would actually engage in a shooting match for real you really don't have a clue.

Well, the pictures on youtube are unclear, but the shooting claim is unimportant anyway. What is important, is that a RN vessel is deliberately baiting the bear, and as with all these type of incidents, accidents (deliberate or otherwise), can and do happen; leading to escalations. As for Putin, he secured the Crimea and will no doubt defend it, and imo there are more important things for the RN to be doing at the moment; than pretending to be, what they no longer are.

The RN vessel was doing part of its job which is "showing the flag". A better use of its time than sitting in Portsmouth twiddling its depth charges.

"Showing the Flag" went with the British Empire, along with Gunboat Diplomacy, in an age when we had the largest Fleet in the World.   All we need to be concerned with now, is the defence of our tiny, over-populated Island, against illegal entry or exploitation of our natural resources.

HMS Defender is a bit big to be deployed in coastal protection. Here's some more informed comment:

The Russians were having an "exercise" , on how to defeat a Carrier Task Force; and the RN interupted it.   These incursions by the West are designed to make a point, the point being, that we still recognise the sovereignty of the Ukraine over the Crimea, or freedom of navigation in the S/China sea.   The problem is, that in trying to "make a point", all they achieve is the ratcheting up of hostilities and the ultimate sanction of war.

There are no "hostilities" to ramp up, just some diplomatic word throwing. This sort of thing has been going on since the end of WW2 by both sides. The Russians, if they were having an exercise on how to defeat a Carrier Task Force, will have been overjoyed to have the real thing to practice on 🤣.

Amazingly enough ,some sensitive papers relating to this incident have been found at a bus stop & passed to the BBC among others.

Just think of the saving  MI6 could make on spy gadgets and travel for their agents. Just issue them with a bus pass and timetables for the local buses.....🕵️‍♂️.
