By signing up to it, we've lost full independent control of part of the U.K.; clearly the idea on the part of the EU. The EU want to safeguard their internal market, well, this can be easily done by them providing a hard border in Ireland, with customs post etc. They have borders with other none EU States - Turkey, Russia etc; so nothing that can't be managed. Just hope Frost plays hard ball. The amount of cross border trade between the 2 Irelands is minimal, certainly for goods from England, Wales and Scotland, as these would be imported directly into the Republic without touching NI. Confused52 Posted June 10, 2021 Report Share Posted June 10, 2021 There are two solutions and the detail of how to fix the problem was to be agree in a joint committee after Brexit, but not before. The EU way is to get the UK to agree to dynamic standards where we just continue to follow their standards for everything to be import from GB to NI. We rejected this in the main negotiation so this is a rear guard action. The other for the EU to accept that the standards that were in place the moment before Brexit and we still follow today should be recognised as equivalent standards so no checks are needed unless we diverge from EU standards in future. The latter mechanism is good enough for Australia in a limited set of foods but we cannot have that because the EU want to keep us under their standards which they can change, let the French off following them and reduce UK competitiveness in exports. Observer II Posted June 10, 2021 Author Report Share Posted June 10, 2021 The fact is, the EU are totally peeved by our apparent success and still want to impose an element of control over us; in this case, one which could lead to creating a unified Ireland and thus the break up of the UK. Their argument about food standards is currently false, as we are still EU compliant and in many cases, maintain even higher standards than the EU.
