Lt Kije
Non EU country's invest in country's within the EU Asp so they can gain access to the free market, Nissan in Sunderland being a good example, If they have no access why would they come here Asp?
asperity
We don't have to be part of the EUSSR to have access to the "free?" market. Still waiting for some hard figures Lt Kije. Come on, use your immense powers of persuasion, don't just give bald statements with no basis
Lt Kije
Nissan came here Asp because we were within the EU, if it's made in the EU, you can move it round the EU. The UK would loose alot of foreign investment especially from countries outside the EU if we were not in it. alot of American companies went to Ireland for the same reason. asperity
The American companies went to Ireland because of the low Corporation Tax rates, nothing to do with the EUSSR. Same with the UK when we had lower tax rates. We don't need to keep feeding this insatiable beast to trade with the rest of the world (including, by the way, Europe). It's only political vanity that is keeping us tied to this millstone.
Lt Kije
They went to Ireland instead of the UK for the low tax Asp, they wanted to be within the EU, and they wanted an English speaking country.
Peter T
Isn't English the recognised universal language? How did we manage all those years ago before the EU?
wolfie
Can the UK pull out, or could we be left with a situation where Scotland and Wales decide to stay in?
Bazj
Salmonds whole financial independance package is no doubt based on massive EU funding for an independant Scotland.... and as for Wales; who would pay for all those bloody road signs!!?? inky pete
Nissan came here Asp because we were within the EU, if it's made in the EU, you can move it round the EU. The UK would loose alot of foreign investment especially from countries outside the EU if we were not in it. alot of American companies went to Ireland for the same reason. Wrong as usual Lt, and well you know it. Also deliberately mis-leading to boot, in common with most of the lies and propaganda spewng forth from Brussels. Nissan came here because we are within the EEA (European Economic Area) - which gives us the tariff free access to European markets enjoyed by all EEA members, regardless of whether they are members of the EU or the euro-zone. The EU is NOT the National Lottery, you do not have to "be in it to win it" By the way, the Nissan plant in Sunderland, the largest and most productive car plant in Europe, was founded in 1984 - a good year BEFORE the Schengen surrender which lead to the fully open borders you claim brought them here. The main incentive they received to come to the UK was that they were sold the 800 acre Sunderland Airfield site (formerly RAF Usworth) by the UK government at agricultural land rates of £1800 per acre. In contrast, when a large American car manufacturer opened a plant in Spain after receiving some truely MASSIVE EU incentives and subsidies they found that the absence record and quality control of the locally recruited workforce were so appalling that they closed the plant within a year - but still had to pay the workers they laid off a percentage of their full salaries for FIVE YEARS afterwards. Lt Kije
No inky they came because we are in the EU, nice try though
inky pete
Not according to their own press releases at the time. Yes, access to European markets was important to them. No, you don't have to be in the EU to have that.
Lt Kije
Their press release says they came here because of the British workforce and the grant from the government, what was not in the press release is the fact it is easy to get rid of UK workforce, but it does mention access to the European market

P J
if the E.U. is so good, why are you so scared of a referendum?
inky pete
No inky they came because we are in the EU, nice try though The Nissan Sunderland plant was founded in 1984 and came on stream in 1986. According to it's OWN history, the EU came into existence when the Treaty on European Union was signed at Maastricht. That was in February of 1993 and it came into force on 1 November 1993, Nissan had been in the UK for almost 10 years by then. Please explain how they can possibly have been brought here by our membership of the EU!
Lt Kije
They came for the free market inky aswell you know
Bazj
if the E.U. is so good, why are you so scared of a referendum? because he is frightened that us plebs will just vote against it because we don't like Europe.....
Lt Kije
I am not against a referendum , I would just like a level playing field. We have had an anti EU press for years who only give out negatives when it comes to Europe. When was the last time you read a story in the press that put anything to do with Europe in a positive light.?
