Peter T
The days of the Satanic Mills are long gone. They can't use the same excuses to strike. How many are classed as poor?
Peter T
You mean like "the rich"?! obs, you have a "class" obsession. Get over it.
observer
Nope, I happen to believe everyone is 1st class, hence I don't share your deference to so-called "betters" and jealousy of those with the bottle to fight them.

asperity
Anyone with half an ounce of common sense would understand that everyone is not blessed with the same intelligence and ability and we are not, therefore, all equal. QED socialists do not have half an ounce of common sense. If we all were born the same the socialists wouldn't have to come up with something as fatuous as their clause 4.
fugtifino
Try this simple exercise, asp: i) Define "Clause 4" as you understand it. ii) Define "common sense" as you understand it. Which is more woolly?

Sad comment obs. You don't have a clue. We are ALL different, and there are and always will be different levels of affluence. You can't change it and never will. Just the same as there will always be bosses. The world/country needs the different skills that are out there. What would you want, a population of brain surgeons or a population of street cleaners? What am I supposed to be jealous of??? I am comfortable with myself, and take the fight where it is needed. I don't spend my day nit picking over trivial news items. Perhaps your time would be better spent helping your community improve, or you could do the CAP thing again and see how many want to be on your bus. Given the fact that you have been on both sides of the fence, I am surprised at your lack of understanding at what makes the world go round. It's money that makes the world go round, despite the incompetence of the politicians. Those who feel they don't have enough should do something about it. Have a nice day. observer
Do you think for one second that I don't recognise that we're all different, with different attributes etc? - shows your level of understanding. However, in a civilized State, and for the mutual wellbeing of all, it rests with Governance to harness those diverse aptitudes/abilities for the common good - you know the phrase Georgie used " we're all in it together"! inky pete
in a civilized State, and for the mutual wellbeing of all, it rests with Governance to harness those diverse aptitudes/abilities for the common good Including not expecting the State's relatively few real wealth generators to pay so many times more than their share of the State's costs in wealth based taxes that they just give up, stop generating wealth, close down the businesses which put food on the tables of so many of those with different aptitudes/abilities, and retire to the countryside to live comfortably off their overseas investments????
Lt Kije
Wrong inky, over the last 30 years and probably longer the wealthy have been getting wealthier, the wealth gap has been increasing, they need to pay more, they need to pay their way!!! Right Inky, wrong Lt Kije and Obs (agreeing for once and, typically on the wrong side). The answer is not for the population as a whole to pay more, its for the politicians to stop wasting our money! They seem to have got it into their tiny minds that all our earnings actually belong to them and they are the ones who decide how much of our earnings we should be allowed to keep. Does this not annoy anybody? Are we happy for the political class, and they are amongst the highest paid people in the country, to steal our money? Lt Kije and Obs, you are acting as apologists for the real villains
Lt Kije
I quite like, that they spend our money on the National health service, and on Fire brigade and Police ect
asperity
Oh Lt Kije, if only life was as simple as you like to think it is. They don't just take enough money from us to pay for essential services, they take enough money to pay for these essential services 5,6,7 or more times over and then plead poverty. They give themselves and their favourites salaries and pensions far above what the average taxpayer could ever hope for. The experts in government are assisted by highly paid management consultants (why, if they are worth the high salaries do they need advisors?) I won't revisit the billions of pounds of OUR money that is wasted on paying the EUSSR to make our lives intolerable
Lt Kije
I don't think the EU is a waste of money, or a lot of their things the government spend our money on, something yes but not all, I don't mind big government if they help the weak and vunrable in society , As I said in a previous thread I like the Nordic system , they don't have a small government. asperity
If the government didn't waste so much of our money the they would be able to pay for more doctors, nurses, hospital beds, firemen, policemen, teachers etc. Big government should mean better accountability. With the form of big government we have in this country there seems to be no accountability at all, with so many people sticking their noses in the trough, duplicating each others "work" and telling us what we can and can't, should and shouldn't do like we were naughty schoolkids. A bit of streamling is called for methinks
observer
Don't actually disagree with you on that approach Asp; but creating a lean machine in the political sphere is counter intuative and usually electorally terminal, hence politicians always promise more, even though it cannot be afforded, cos basically, that's where the votes are. So I guess, ultimately, it's the majority of voters who are to blame.
