Peter T
Yes, Harry. I forgot that one. But I doubt that people today wouldn't know what you meant.

fugtifino
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. That sums it up for me, the rest sounds a bit too Gradgrind. You're allowed to enjoy yourself y'know.
Peter T
You're allowed to enjoy yourself y'know. My "standards" still allow me to do that, and have never stopped me.

Dizzy
No matter what standards people have they will enjoy themselves so this is a bit of a pointless conversation really. Going back a page and starting with Harry's first post... how on earth did that then suddenly change to 16 year old unmarried mothers in homes ? And looking back even further... when you look at old photos of the early 1900's people were always dressed as smartly as they could when out in public (well apart from the very poor of course) and it is rare to see a labourer without a flat cap and waistcoat on... I presume most people worked hard and probably had respect for others and those in 'authority'. Some standards years ago were probably far better than they are now in some respects and some standards these days are probably far better than they were then. I'm confusing myself now but it all depends on the types of 'standards' you are referring to
wolfie
Can you imagine working for a company that only has a little more than 635 employees, but, has the following employee statistics.. 29 have been accused of spouse abuse 7 have been arrested for fraud 9 have been accused of writing bad cheques 17 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses 3 have done time for assault 71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit 14 have been arrested on drug-related charges 8 have been arrested for shoplifting 21 are currently defendants in lawsuits 84 have been arrested for drink driving in the last year and collectively, this year alone, they have cost the British tax payer £92,993,748 in expenses!!! Which organisation is this? It's the 635 members of the House of Commons. The same group that cranks out hundreds of new laws each year designed to keep the rest of us in line. And just to top all that they probably have the best 'corporate' pension scheme in the country - whilst trying to ensure that everyone else has the worst possible!!

To familiarity and common dress code. Another instance whereby standards have fallen.

silverlady54
I believe what it all comes down to is self respect, tolerance and respect for others and putting others before yourself. These are the values that are learned in the home before any other influences can be blamed.
