Lt Kije
Mps have backed a plan for all males to have a DNA test is Bristol in the hunt for the murderer, just wondered what other people thought. I would give DNA if asked, but I would want it destroyed after the case
Dizzy
wonder what they would make of your DNA Lt Yours could be used for all sorts of weird and wonderful cloning experiments Joking aside... like you I would happily have a DNA test but would not want it storing
inky pete
The (female) MP who's calling for all 250,000 males in Bristol to be DNA tested is conveniently ignoring three things. i). there's no evidence that the murderer is male. ii). at a cost of a couple of hundred pounds per test, it'd cost tens of millions. iii). the police don't even know yet whether the potential DNA sample they have is viable - or if it's significant even if it is - so they currently have nothing to match against. There is no way on earth that I would voluntarily allow my DNA to be taken. The authorities simply couldn't be trusted not to use it for any other purposes, and to destroy it - and all records of it - after use. wolfie
I believe dna tests can now be done for as little as ?40. Still expensive when 1/4 million tests need to be done.
inky pete
That'll be a paternity type DNA test, where just a few specific genetic markers are examined to determine whether two samples come from people who are related. A full DNA identification test examining the whole genome is much more involved.
observer
What Inky said. Interesting that the finger of suspicion has now moved from the Landlord to casting a wide net - seems the cops are basically clueless.
Bazj
wonder what they would make of your DNA Lt Yours could be used for all sorts of weird and wonderful cloning experiments You could just imagine the 19 pro-europeans that are currentl;y in the country all rushing to mate with Kije.... their togas flowing in the breeze and the sand tickling their toes through their sandals! Lt Kije
If they got your DNA Baz, they would have got the missing link between ameba's and us

Dizzy
Interesting that the finger of suspicion has now moved from the Landlord to casting a wide net - seems the cops are basically clueless. And yet pictures of the landlord have been splashed accross every paper etc from the day he was first questionned and then released... is that fair and should it be allowed
wahl
such a distrust of the police and government!! Perhaps because they do not delete dna samples now despite a ruling from the eu.
silverlady54
And yet pictures of the landlord have been splashed accross every paper etc from the day he was first questionned and then released... is that fair and should it be allowed No, it isn't fair! You do have to wonder if the media picked on him because he is a single male, slightly eccentric and lived on his own. Incorrect assumptions of guilt to this extent should carry consequences!! observer
Well girls, you raise an interesting point - why the fixation of the media on this particular murder? And why the almost over the shoulder, monitoring of the police investigation? And how does the publicity on the Landlord sit with due legal process?
Dizzy
No idea of the answers to any of those Obs. Just been reading the paper and it seems that all her 'Facebook' friends are now being DNA tested as well as the poice using technology to see which suspects mobile phones were sending a signal to nearby masts regardless of whether the phone was actually used or not.... it only needs to have been switched on. Clever...
Bazj
........but what if the murderer either lived in the area or left his/her phone at home?
Dizzy
Ooooh good thinking... I suppose it could work the other way too ie a suspect who is completely inocent could live there or have sent a signal too Maybe not so clever then eh
observer
What if, the murderer contaminated the crime scene with hair clippings etc from a perfectly innocent person(s)?
wolfie
So the murderer is a hairdresser?
Lt Kije
Wolfe, be careful you might get recruited into the police
observer
The point being made is: that there seems to be an over reliance on forensics these days, when they are not a silver bullet.
