Lt Kije
Howard Flight a new Tory Peer said; "We're going to have a system where the middle classes are discouraged from breeding because it's jolly expensive. "But for those on benefits, there is every incentive. Well, that's not very sensible." Is he right Should he be in the House of Lords
harry hayes
thought we had free speech in this country. Events of the past week or so seems to suggest otherwise. This man and the previous one only said what a lot of people think. Doesn't mean he is right, but they should certainly be allowed to say it. Happy days
asperity
Well said Harry
Lt Kije
I never met anyone that thought that Harry, I'm all for free speach, I asked is he right and should he be in the house of Lords
asperity
He is right, and why shouldn't he be in the Lords?
Lt Kije
So Asperity you think the middle classes will stop breeding,
Bazj
Over the past 13 or 14 years, it certainly was an advantage to be on benefits when having children....
Lt Kije
Apparently Baz, We are going to be over run, and were not going to have a middle class to keep them in their place
observer
Well, if you trap all the benefit scroungers on sink estates, with nothing else to do, what do you expect them to do when there's no cr*p on TV or street furniture to wreck?! And no, he shouldn't be in the House of Lords, NOT cos he may be a pilok, but cos he's never been elected, along with the rest of the geriatrics. asperity
So Asperity you think the middle classes will stop breeding, Don't be a pillock all the time LtKije. That isn't what he said, and the evidence is there in the public domain, for anyone interested enough to look, that what he said is true. Just because you, and people with your own narrow mindset, find what he says abhorrent doesn't make his obsevation irrelevant. The idea that people with their own opinion should be barred from holding public office is bizarre, and "call me Dave" should be censored for shooting him down!! What has happened to freedom of speech in this country?
Egbert
Surely it was the use of the word "breeding" which caused the uproar? If he had simply said "having children" there would have been no problem. As a matter of fact, the middle classes have ALWAYS been less inclined to have children than the working classes. That's one of the reasons they are middle class! They are more inclined to plan their families, like they plan everything else in life. As to whether the guy should be in the Lord or not, he is no different to any of the others as far as I know and certainly nothing in what he said should disqualify him
Lt Kije
No Asp you said you agreed with him, stop back tracking
asperity
Who is back tracking? What he said is true, and he was within his rights to say it. But what you claim he said was the tabloid newspaper spin on it
Lt Kije
No it does not, it was a direct quote
wolfie
Who is back tracking? What he said is true, and he was within his rights to say it. But what you claim he said was the tabloid newspaper spin on it It seems that the chap himself no longer thinks it's true having not only apologised but withdrawn his statement. IMO I don't think what he said is true but having said it, he should have the courage to stand by it.
asperity
So Asperity you think the middle classes will stop breeding, He didn't say the middle classes will stop breeding. You quoted what he said in the first post, that the middle classes will be discouraged from breeding, not the same thing at all. As for his withdrawal of the statement and apology, he was forced into that by call me Dave. It's sad that politicians are discouraged from speaking their minds and forced to toe the party line. This only helps to give the impression that they are all dishonest. If they all said what they truly believed perhaps we would have a better idea of what we are voting for! observer
In the past, folk had large families, cos infant mortality was greater and they either needed hiers for their estates or kids to look after them in their old age, as pensions and other benefits didn't exist. With the advent of pensions and more money to spend on oneself, for many, kids became an uneccessary burden. Except for for those who began to rely on child allowance as a source of income and breeding as a career choice.
