observer
A British woman was arrested in a Dubai Mall, for wearing a bikini.
Peter T
Must have been suffering from sunstroke. What did she expect? It's only England where you can wave two fingers at authority and get away with it. You then become known as a minority group.
Evil Sid
believe she was arguing with a local who had complained that her top was a bit low cut so she stripped down to her bikini to protest. this got the mall security involved and both women were taken into custody and questioned. so it may have been the bikini that set it all off but it was probably the disturbance that led to the arrest. or maybe not. makes good headline though

fugtifino
Silly bint. Here's what the Foreign Office advise: "You should respect local traditions, customs, laws and religions at all times and be aware of your actions to ensure that they do not offend other cultures or religious beliefs. "Women should dress modestly when in public areas, such as shopping malls. Clothes should cover the tops of the arms and legs, and underwear should not be visible. Public displays of affection are frowned upon, and there have been several arrests for kissing in public." http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/aug/05/dubai-bikini-briton-arrest

Bazj
Seems to me she was a typical Brit on holiday, no respect for others or herself. Now you may say that but take it the other way then; why is it acceptable for Muslims to wear Burkhas in the UK then? They are not part of the everyday attire of the country. If the only way to ensure that "strange" dress is accepted is to constantly wear it, then maybe one day the bikini will be come acceptable dress in Dubai, just as the Burkha has become an acceptable dress over here....... or maybe hell will freeze over before the Muslims bend their rules?? Lt Kije
Baz How many women do you see in this country walking around shopping centres in bikinis Or have I been missing something by successfully avoiding going to the Trafford Centre all these years
Bazj
Kije, you see lots of women walking round in bikinis in this country and in shopping centres and town centres too, just as you see lots of women walking round in Burkhas because rightly or wrongly, this country tolerates and is flexible enough to accept stuff like that. Dubai is not so flexible. It is a paranoid Muslim state (as can be seen by their recent switching off of the blackberry system) and because Muslims are not a tolerent people; they will never accept western ideals, however they are more than happy to argue that they should be able to dress and practice as they wish in other countries.... silverlady54
'Now you may say that but take it the other way then; why is it acceptable for Muslims to wear Burkhas in the UK then? ' Baz J, Personally, I don't think Burkas are acceptable in public. I find it intimidating if I can't see someone's face and I think that faces should be identifiable at all times. observer
simple - just don't speak to them, if you can't see their face - sorted.
silverlady54
That's not the point Observer, you can't see who is under the Burka. It could be anyone about to do anything! If you can see a face you can use your instincts.
observer
Agreed: but if lilly livered Governments arn't going to ban them, all you can do is ignore folk who wear such ridicilous supersticious dress codes.
