Probably why Ladies hair stylists charge so much. if they had had the hairstyles back in then they would have probably been seen as "wanton women" and "no better than they should be". The high forhead look in the first picture accents the eyes and make them look "hard, no nonsense types" whereas the more concealing hairstyle softens the facial area making them look a lot less "threatening" to eyes used to more modern hairstyles. As for "modern gear" probably wouldn't make that much of a difference, remember half the fun is getting the wrapping off the presents as any kid will tell you, whatever is inside the wrapping is a bonus.
