AdrianR
Regardless as to whether lights of not are the issue, there is a issue as to traffic which is making Wton not competitive when compared to other competing local towns / centres. No one will sit and wait in a 30 minute que to get anywhere unless that places has a USP. W/ton i'm afraid to say doesnt. With the tolls on the bridge likley to exacerbate matters significanlty then unless the planners do something to speed things up then people will continue to go elsewhere. The new lights at Albarn if they dont work right will affect many roads as there are already significant grid locks at the junctions either end.
Coffee
Generally, you don't get gridlocked because of traffic lights (so long as they're working properly). They might delay how long it takes you to reach the next bit of jam. You only have to see the Mersey St / Church St roundabout to see how, without lights, thoughtless drivers can soon gum up a junction in all directions. Maybe they shouldn't but there are many in Warrington that do, Over the Mersey is one location, the temp lights by Asda gridlock the roundabout by dale street, the traffic lights on the M62 roundabout gridlocks traffic, on the A49 and slip roads, the rounadbout lights on Winwich RD gridlocks the roads leading onto it also
asperity
I've always found the Mersey Street/Church Street roundabout to be one of the better ones to be honest, not that I drive through there at peak times very often.
observer
All junctions and roundabouts are fine, so long as you don't get idiots entering them without a clear exit thus blocking the other routes. EG: just as a hint, they put some broken white lines (advisory), across the roundabout, so you could get from Buttermarket St to Church St, through the queue that was backed up from Battersby Lane Island. And believe it or not, some bone heads still block it. I would argue that every junction should have yellow hatching or a keep clear road signage; IF I thought drivers had the IQ to comply.
