Davy51
With the news that 3 soldiers have been killed & 6 badly injured when their personnel carrier was blown up in Afghanistan, it appears that the situation is no better than when we first went over there .The casualty figures are down but that is because the Afghan forces are now involved & apart from taking most of the casualties they are being over run & even losing ground because they don't have any air support. Apparently casualty figures for them are not reported by our media so nothing has really been achieved apart from alienating the muslim race at the cost of all the deaths & maimings on all sides . observer
An exercise in futility from it's beginning.
wolfie
Perhaps we should just use chemical weapons and wipe them all out.
observer
Nope, we shouldn't have sent our troops there in the first place. When we've left, with an entourage of Afghans hanging on to the coat tails of our troops; the Taliban will simply move back in - "back to square one". Lt Kije
Terrorist organisations have and still use Afghanistan to train terrorists
inky pete
.....but thousands of their leaders, virtually all their skilled trainers, plus huge stocks of their weapons and communications equipment have been destroyed. At the same time, their intelligence and logistics operations in the UK and Europe have been penetrated and largely rolled up. They can play with a few toy guns in the desert all they like, their infrastructure and their ability to mount big attacks in the West has been taken from them. Job Done. Lt Kije
Has it, sadly UK citizens fly out for training, perhaps we should sort that out.

observer
Bit of wishfull thinking there Inky: The original objective of US involvement in Afghanistan was to pursue and eliminate Bin Laden and Al Quaeda; not the Taliban, who had no designs beyond their borders. Al Quaeda merely transferred operations to bases in Pakistan and other failed States and continue their activities through various affiliates throughout the world. The Taliban have continued to fight a war against a foreign invasion of their Country; have penetrated the Police and Military, and are now launching a Spring offensive, so the "job" is far from "done". All in all, it's been a military defeat, and worse a political defeat, as the Karsai Regime is riddled with corruption with the probable outcome of ISAF withdrawal being a Taliban take over or a return to tribal civil war. Bazj
Terrorist organisations have and still use Afghanistan to train terrorists but mainly Pakistan..... we need to sort out that cesspit of a country next; that is where most terrorists seem to be trained
observer
They're operating from training camps all over the world Baz; mainly Pakistan, but Yemen, Mali, Somalia, parts of Indonesia; recruitment catchment areas are even wider and no doubt includes parts of the UK. Not sure we could afford to invade all these places, even if we had military capacity; suppose we'll have to rely on the CIA and drones to suppress these groups?
