observer Posted February 4, 2009 Author Report Share Posted February 4, 2009 Another post about "the barracks" prompts me to recall, that the 40th foot (later S/Lancs) arrived late at the battle of Waterloo, and was positioned, in square formation in Lambert's Brigade, at the cross roads (just above La Haye St). A French horse battery came up close and wreaked havoc on the squares with cannister fire, causing many to "die in square"; there is a small memorial stone at the site to this day.
