Observer II
Seems we're getting lots of scares these days over the supply chains - the latest being medications, which are running out for many; but no doubt food and other essentials can be added to the list. We seem to be living in amore volatile world, where merchant sea traffic is interupted as in the Red Sea, where road transport is required to deliver when needed, (just in time), rather than maintaining a stock. So isn't it time we made moves to become more self sufficient, as we had to do in 1940 and actually provided local employment by locally producing as much as possible ? Evil Sid
but the farms have been built on to provide "affordable" housing. skills that are required are not being taught at schools. raw materials for the various medications are not available in this country. younger people today do not want jobs, they want a career so any skills they acquire have to be taught to the next bod on the job when they move on up the ladder. ninearches
The product of various governments taking their eye off the ball. I am basically a Tory but the policies of Thatcher in selling off the family silver in order to get low taxation was short sighted & wrong. Policies followed by subsequent governments that have produced an import dependent economy & a benefit dependent population.
Observer II
True Dave, Not sure whether the damage is irreparable, probably with our current Con/Lib/Lab uni Party and a weak and soft younger population. The strongest Nations will be those who can rely on their own resources and actually produce things, mainly energy. But with the crazy drive for net zero, all we seem to be doing is self harming, socially and economically.

We have never been self-sufficient, we have always been a trading Nation, we were never self sufficient in the 1940s, you are guilty of perverting history again Obs
Observer II
I didn't say we were self sufficient or ever have been, what I said was that we should strive to be more self sufficient, and thus less dependant .

Self-sufficient in what exactly, We buy goods from other Nations, and they buy our services, if we don't buy their goods, would they still buy our services?, would you have our bankers go to the fields, like Poll Pot did??
