Observer II
Sending students back to Uni, has unsurprisingly resulted in a spike in covid cases, so they've been told to self isolate in there flats, halls of residence etc. The Uni authorities have decided to continue lectures by skype. So if they can manage with skype, why didn't they leave them at home, where they would be able to enjoy a family Xmas ? Seems these attempts at "normality" are just contributing to a continuation of the pandemic, and losing public respect and compliance for "the rules". 😷
Davy51
I think ,just as importantly, skype, internet in general could probably be used instead of bricks & mortar seats of learning. One student being interviewed has one ,one hour lecture per week while he will spend the rest of his time whooping it up.
Evil Sid
How many people have taken their degrees over the years using the open university. No concrete halls just study at home in your own time and you can do it whilst in full time employment. No huge expensive tuition fees or need to find rent for accommodation, just the cost of the open university course plus the added bonus that even in this pandemic you can be home at Christmas with the family. Speaking of Christmas only 84 more covid catching opportunities until Christmas....🤧
Observer II
Such logic Sid, appears to be lost on our society and it's politicians in particular; but I think the institution has it's roots in it's origins; which were basically to educate a ruling elite and preserve their dominance over the great unwashed. Even after the "sons of miners" gained access and went on to enter Parliament and move the social pendulum to the left, it still retained it's original objective of producing an dominant elite. With Blair's "education, education, education" this went on with the objective increasing University graduates numbers, with increases in the number of Universities and the peddling of mickey mouse degrees. Now they produce a PC elite, programmed with woke propaganda, hence the current wave of culture wars. This largely explains the current polarisation of society, with an educated elite enjoying the fruits of our system and having contempt for the toiling masses. 😠
Davy51
So the Socialist dream has given us two classes of the Working Class , the elite who look down on the oiks ? This internet fuelled pandemic does ,as with the High Street & its struggling shops, give new opportunities for internet involvement in education & less need for universities as such.
