algy
I'm getting increasingly fed up with the government giving financial aid to winging, sponging countries who can't manage their own finances the latest being Portugal, can't entirely blame this load of idiots that we have running (or should be that ruining) the country, as Darling representing the last load of idiots signed up to commit us to the fiasco, they are now saying that we must contribute as 40% of our exports go to Europe, great, so we sell them our goods, then give them 'X' billons of our money that our populace have been informed that we must increase our contribution to pay off our debts, that then has the effect of cancelling out any profit that we should have made from trading with Europe in the first place, I say pull the plug and let those that can't manage their own finances learn the hard way, 'Sink or Swim'. Lt Kije
We need to know how much money our banks have already put into Portugal, because not helping might lead to the UK ending loosing more money.
observer
Sympathise with your sentiment Algy, but in this new "global village" with people and goods moving around it almost as fast as finances, we are basically inter-dependent and inter-reliant - alas, the joys of international capitalism. Whilst we didn't thankfully sign up to membership of the Euro, we did join their loan guarantee scheme for sick and ailing ecomomies, so if Portugal goes bust, we owe them ?4billion. Even the USA owes around a third of it's national debt to the Chinese.
Ricky
they are now saying that we must contribute as 40% of our exports go to Europe  Is that before the "Rotterdam distortion" is taken into account, or after?  Also, If you were a bank, would you give a loan to a failing business, (lets say a sandwich shop), even though some bank workers get sandwiches from the shop (trade)? observer
You'll be pleased to know Alg; that the Coalition are to enshrine in law a commitment to spend .7% of our GDP on overseas aid; no doubt inspired by the liberal luvvies - at a time of cuts for us Brits - the inmates have certainly taken over the assylum. inky pete
If our net contribution to the EU is included in this limit for overseas aid then at least it would be a step in the right direction!
inky pete
What  Just because you trade with someone, doesn't make it a good idea to lend them money!
observer
Doubt it. our "contribution" to the EU is like a tax; some of which, will in turn, be doled out in overseas aid by the EU - they're taking the P.
inky pete
EU contribution - money sent overseas in the hope of securing more coming back in trade one day. Â Overseas aid - money sent overseas in the hope.......... Â Â I really don't see the difference (apart from the money sent to Pakistan, India etc. is probably less diluted by corruption before it benefits any real people)
observer
Agree - it's all money we should be spending on ourselves - after all, folk from all over the world are coming here for "aid" anyway!
inky pete
Ooh there's a good idea! Â Count all the money spent on supporting and processing asylum seekers as overseas aid. Â I like that one!!!!
algy
Looks like Greece has spent, wasted or disposed of the loan they received last year and are now back with the 'begging bowl' no doubt Laurel & Hardy will tip up more of OUR hard earned cash. Sha
You'll all be pleased to know then that Dave & Co are now going to rob the National lottery funds to use as overseas aid! Â Whilst I've no problem at all with Britain as a civilised and Christian nation giving aid to other countries in need I do think it's sinking to the pits to rob funds which should be used to help our poorer communities. Why can't they get the money from taxing banker's bonuses etc?
observer
The problem with all this "aid"; apart from the portions that are immediatley spent on arms to keep BAE workers in a job; or to top up the Swiss bank accounts of despotic leaders; is that it creates a culture of dependency, rather than self sustainability. The ignorance that keeps producing more mouths to feed in countries that can't produce adequate food just carries on, with access to information about the rich Western world, inciting the desperate to migrate.
