observer
Seems the Town was surrounded by military Camps during WW2 - RAF Padgate; RN at Stretton, later the Yanks at Burtonwood etc - with all the troops piling into the T/C for a night out - how did we ever manage? harry hayes
And the dear old peninsula barracks. Their football teams used to attract crowds of over a thousand to Rylands rec. Lots of really good players passed through there. happy days
observer
There was a big fight (probably one amongst many) in Town; it started in a club near Market Gate, when some French sailors (vichy) were taken on by some Poles, then everyone joined in, the fight gradually spilling out onto Bridge St, and then being herded into Queen's Gardens - where the MPs started the process of clubbing their own nationals and throwing them onto the back of trucks - well that's what my Dad told me! Peter T
At least they were fighting each other. I have heard that about the MP's. They didn't mess about.
