Harry Whitehead

It was good to see that my old friend Harry Whitehead attended the centenary celebrations of Alderman Bolton School - the school where he was a pupil more than 70 years ago.

The school is named after a distinguished Warrington councillor and Harry was himself a distinguished councillor of a later era.

When he was Mayor in 1971-72 I wrote a critical piece about the way he controlled council meetings which, I must admit, clearly upset him.

But he was a big enough man to take it and, perhaps, to forgive and forget. We later developed a friendly relationship.

What did I criticise him for? Taking too strong a line with fellow councillors to keep control at council meetings.

I must have been mad! Come back Harry. We need councillors of your calibre more than ever!

I guess there won't be many more named after councillors in the future then!?

Why not -it is usually the elected members who decide on the names of places!
