The latest, based on our genome, is that homo-sapiens mated with Neanderthals. But the way some explanations try to paint it, you'd think that these liasons were the results of some kind of love affair, between the different species. Aside from the difficulties of communication, the probabilty that the two species conducted a war of attrition, which eventually ended in Neanderthal extinction; the only logical deduction would be that such liasons were the results of rape.
