Will the carnage ever cease ?

Recommended Posts

Another mass shooting in the USA, using automatic weapons designed for the battlefield.   Will the Yanks ever introduce prohibitions to such weapons, given the 2nd amendment was created in an age of swords and muskets.

I suppose in the days of protecting the fledgling  USA ,the idea of empowering the man in the street to carry arms was a great idea in having a ready made defence force. It is just a pity that no one had the foresight that anything so trivial & possibly vital to the security of the New World  would ever have progressed to today's nightmare scenario. No one ,not even today ,could have that foresight, but has any political bloc in the US got the bottle to change the Constitution ? The powerful gun lobby has champions everywhere &  arms is a multi million $ industry.

It's very easy to point the finger at the NRA and the "gun lobby", but the fact is that the majority of US citizens want the right to bear arms. The parts of the USA which have the most stringent anti gun legislation also have the highest number of gun homicides.

Having listened to both sides, I admit that in a Country that has more firearms than people, it would be a wise precaution to own one for self defence. The question is however, does it need to be a military grade weapon designed for mass killing, when a simple side arm would suffice?

Or even a couple of dozen of them? Obviously the system they have is flawed but it's their country, their rules so I'm not going to attempt to preach to them.

Yup, now's the right time to do absolutely nothing about gun control in the US, so don't even talk about it.

This will guarantee that it will never happen again, in the only country in the world where it happens with any kind of regularity.

It's what the people want.

You're right Fugs, the wholesale slaughter occurring every day in the Middle East is just a figment of our collective minds.

Not alone but in a league of their own.  All the ones you list,  were they Christian murderers?

More Americans have died from gunshots in the last 50 years than in all of the wars in American history.

Obviously not, it's just a list of recent shootings worldwide in order of magnitude.

Hey Fugs you were the one that said it is the ONLY country in the world where it happens. I didn't say it isn't a problem (for the USA), but if you look at the statistics the States that have the most stringent gun laws also have the highest gun crime.  We have a blanket ban on guns in this country but it doesn't stop people getting shot. The problem in the USA is wider than just gun ownership, it's lawlessness amongst certain demographics. Have a look at the statistics yourself, but try and find a more reliable source than the Grauniad for a change.

Perhaps the reason the states with the most stringent gun laws record the most gun crime is because their laws are more stringent. Go to another state with more lax laws &  some gun crime may not be recorded. For instance , when does defending your property become murder or a lesser gun crime in different individual states ?

Maybe you missed that bit, or maybe there's a reason that you're choosing to ignore it.

A fire arms or shotgun license is required, and entails Police background checks and increased home security that can be regularly checked on by the Police.
