observer
So someone makes an (historic) allegation and it's all over the media; whether it's true or false. Perhaps time for anonymity until and unless the allegations are proven to be true in a court conviction? If the allegation is proven to be untrue, perhaps time for the complainant to be charged with wasting police and courts time, and for CPS to be forced to pay compensation to the accused? observer
According to Levenson, there is no need for the media to reveal the identity of such accused; unless they present a current risk to the public. One would expect also, that unproven allegations to the police are treated in confidence until proven.
asperity
The disturbing feature of the police search of Cliff Richards' property is the way that the media were informed ahead of the event, and possibly before Cliff Richards himself was told. Trial by media in action.
