Stallard12
My father loved 18th and 19th century poetry and instilled the same love in me. However, when he decided to write, he must have had Wingy in mind - what do you think? The elephant is a bird of prey, It hops from bough to bough, It feeds its young on half-inch bolts, And whistles like a cow.
algy
Your father must have had a vivid imagination and a great sense of humour. his poem reminds me of the poems Spike Milligan wrote. I bet hw told you some amusing tales when you were a lad.
Stallard12
More grotesque than funny. He was brought up in a 'private school', the Cottage Homes !!!! Not much fun there, I guess you had to develop a sense of humor to survive. Did ok for a self taught man.
asperity
I remember a version of this from a book we had in Junior school (50 years ago): The elephant is a bonny bird, It flits from bough to bough. It makes its nest in a rhubarb tree And whistles like a cow. It obviously left an impression on me as I've never forgotten it!
