algy
Is this possibly amongst the very first photographs taken in Warrington?. Gas lighting was introduced to light the town streets in 1821. The market square gas lamp with the 'Barley Mow Inn' just discernible on the right. This picture would have been no earlier than 1821, perhaps 1830?. Interesting to note that in this picture there is an Alehouse the 'Leigh Arms' adjoining the Barley Mow whereas the map below shows Market Street running between the 'Barley Mow' and the 'Vine Tavern' 1851 with the position of the lamp marked between the words 'MARKET PLACE'. harry hayes
Very interesting. With all the pubs shown on the last one, people obviously didn't stop in and watch television. Would have loved to police that area in the late evening. Happy days
