LymmParent
You may all have heard this one, but no harm in repeating it... You get a call that is apparently from your credit card company, asking about a possible fraud. They don't ask you for any details - they tell you your card number, the company and amount being questioned. They give you the correct phone number for card security, everything. Only at the very end of the call do they ask you to prove your card is still in your possession by giving them the three numbers off the back. If you do, then the company name they mentioned and the amount they mentioned DO actually appear on your account shortly after the call. observer
Was this a person to person call, or an automated (answer with your dial keys) call? And depending on your dial key answers, was it possible to contact an advisor - person to person?
LymmParent
Human beings, person to person. Absolutely nothing to give it away, never asked personal detail questions, already knew the long card number, gave out the right number for the fraud department, never asked for card details, except that one last question. observer
Errm, that's put my mind at rest anyway!
LymmParent
Well, it's a very sneaky one. We're all on our guard if anyone starts on asking for card account numbers or dates of birth, but I bet that tiny little ask at the end gets a lot of people. observer
have you a link for card security services?
LymmParent
Sorry, I don't. I'm sure one of our fellows will, but I never use online services for that - I ring them.
Dizzy
Certainly wouldn't search online for a web address or phone number for card security. I get many emails from sites saying they are genuine emails from various cards security centres.......their web sites even look exactly like the real ones and have the same contact numbers on them BUT THEY ARE FAKE. Like LP says if you are in any doubt then just get one of your posted statements etc and ring the printed phone number.
bradj
Wonder how they get all those details in the first place?
Dizzy
Lost laptops or data discs containing details.... also false websites pretending to be the real ones and unsuspecting individuals clicking fake links and providing the scammers with their real information...... but more often than not (allegidely) underpaid foreign workers who 'sell on' personal details
observer
Seems the scammers are one step ahead of the Police in this form of criminal activity?
LymmParent
Criminals are always one step ahead - simply because you can't legislate for a crime until it exists. The Internet is a whole new world and laws have yet to catch up. But every time something new comes along, there's a criminal element looking for a way to exploit it. Been happening since the first bloke used a rock to brain his brother.....
