observer
Seems the Yanks have an electoral system that's as flawed as ours. Apparently, whoever gets the majority vote in a State, carries the whole of that State's votes (based on population) towards the total votes for President. This could mean, that whilst the winner carries the most States, the loser could have more votes in terms of the overall population.
Davy51
Apparently, Al Gore lost to Bush despite having more votes ,similar to UKIP with all its votes in our last general election.
observer
That's why some of these systems suit the political establishment, can't truly reflect public opinion now, can they ?!
asperity
I do believe that the last British Government elected by a majority of votes, as opposed to seats, was before WW One.
observer
.... and that was before women had the vote ! First past the post has suited the two party system, and unfortunately led to a careerist elite taking their support for granted, to the point of never delivering for them or listening to their concerns. Brexit has changed the political landscape, and the Party that learns from the referendum, and is prepared to adapt it's policies to public aspirations will tend to prosper in future.
