Bazj
its all a con anyway.... listening to some programme the other week and they reckon that the gas they have sourced using fracking will reduce bills for consumers in America by anything up to 45%.... they asked one of these bods who worked for British Gas if consumers over here could expect the same kind of discounts if fracking goes widespread..... Oh good heavens no...(or words to that effect) was his reply....the situation is totally different in America to over here he said.... what he meant was "we are able to screw any benefits for ourselves and sod the customers!! observer
So blame the Government for not nationalising energy.
fugtifino
Indeed. Or, at least, blame them for de-nationalising it. Mind you, if it wasn't in private ownership, how on earth would the megacorps avoid paying all that tax?

When nuclear power was being developed the myth put about by the government was that it would be so cheap that it wouldn't be worth billing people so we would have free power - instead the nuclear power industry is subsidised via a nuclear levy that we all pay. Nationalise all utilities or scrap all standing charges and set a MAXIMUM national rate and let the power companies compete at or below that rate.
