observer
Seems primitive tribes living near Brazil's border with Peru, have been sighted from the air. In times past, Europeans, led by priests would contact them in oder to civilize them with the word of God, exploiting them and usually infecting them with diseases to which they have no immunity, culminating in them becoming extinct. What should be the reaction of our modern enlightened society to these people - can we be trusted to leave them alone?
Mary
Too late now I'm sure Observer - they have been seen and I am sure we will be hearing all sorts now about them.
Jerry
Mary: Are you familiar with Pete Seeger -- the folk singer? His brother is an explorer in South America who learns the native languages. He was on National Geographic a couple years ago. I can imagine him itching to make another expedition after learning of this new tribe. I'm positive they will not be left alone. Jerry
Peter: knowingly or inadvertent? Maybe both? Did you ever see AT PLAY IN THE FIELDS OF THE LORD? A film with John Lithgow, Tom Berenger, Daryl Hannah, 1991. Terrible movie but fascinating insight into interaction with the 'primitive' tribe in South America. Almost as good was Harrison Ford in Moskito Coast, where a New England inventor decides to bring an ice making machine to the natives in Central America, in hope of being crowned a king or a god. He was looking for respect -- wasn't getting it at home.
