Cleopatra
The government vowed to crackdown on perks in prisons, right? Got that? A crackdown on perks in prison! Lying, good for nothing (insert your own words here). The inmates of a prison in Kent have had personal telephones istalled in their cells. There are plans to extend the scheme to other prisons. Dave, me lad, is that what you call a crackdown on perks in prison? Why not issue every prisoner with a key so they can come and go as they please? Take my advice Dave, start visiting your local job centre, cos it's for sure you're gonna be out of a job come the next election.

observer
What it boils down to, is the fact that Prison Officials are totally incapable of preventing items (drugs, mobiles etc) being smuggled into prisons. So instead of upgrading security (eg glass seperation from visitors as in the US), they go the other way and pander to them - bit like the wider world really! Lt Kije
Most of our prisons are very old Obs, they are just not designed for keeping that kind of stuff out, same old story lack of investment over the years from all governments and we are paying the price,
observer
Agree, but new one's have been built and some are private sector operated. I rarely look to the US for examples of good practise, but I watched a prog about one of their new prisons, which is totally run from a control centre, using CCTV and remote controlled gates; thus the prisoners rarely come in physical contact with the warders, let alone the public. Cleopatra
Old or modern people will still try to smuggle stuff into prisoners unless the officers take a more proactive role in preventing them. And it really is quite easy to prevent any visitor from smuggling drugs into prison. All it takes is one sniffer dog to walk down the queue of visitors waiting to go in at visiting times. Those dogs can sniff without fail if someone is carrying drugs of any quantity. How much time and effort would the process take? Almost negligable. Lt Kije
Wrong question Cleo, you should be asking how much would it cost, sadly
Bazj
All prisoners should be subjected to the most miserable time possible while they are in prison. Buckets and slopping out should be brought back and save us money..... 1 hour a week walk and NO tv, NO gyms, NO libraries and open university courses.... Lt Kije
Tell you what Baz, we should take Australia back, and then we could send them there.

asperity
The price of a tin of dog meat and a few biscuits per day. That will do for the prisoners, but what about the dogs??
Cleopatra
Dog training and a dog for each prison on an already over stretched budget, we love to lock people up over here but we don't like to pay for it Damn the expense! Anyway stop giving the inmates tvs and telephone and the rest of it and that will cover the cost of a few dogs and get the prisoners working sewing mail bags etc., that can be sold to cover the cost. Or maybe better still let the stupid judge sentence them to a stay at a holiday camp instead of prison. That should work out cheaper. Lt Kije
Your bait out of date, the prison service stopped making mail bags years ago, how long have you been in Egypt.
Cleopatra
One wonders why you feel the need to keep referring to Egypt? I do believe the post office still use mail bags. Wonder where they come from? And anyway if not mail bags they could make other things. A mere techhnicality my dear boy... A mere technicality! observer
Unfortunately, harder prison regimes are not on the cards, as the ECHR may consider them offenderphobic; be interesting to see how they do with the right to vote?
Lt Kije
Prison seams to work in Germany and France Obs, might be wrong but they work under the same rules. Which specific ECHR rules regarding prisoners don't you like?
observer
Well, can we start with the one involved in an appeal, which gave some prisoners the vote; then you can trawl through the Hamza saga, which should indicate that Baz's modifications to the penal system would be a non-starter.
Lt Kije
So beside the right to vote, you have not got a clue really, have you which directives you don't like
