Cleopatra
Singapore fell to the Japanese - the biggest surrender of British troops in history. and the damned Singaporeans charge to enter to see a tableau of it!
Wireboy
And the way the POW's were treated by the Japs was appalling. They were real b**tards. I bet if the British troops knew what was coming in them POW camps, many of them would have just chosen to fight till the death in Singapore before surrendering. observer
Which is what the Japs would have expected, given they were outnumbered by around two to one.. In later battles - EG Iwa Jima - of 21,000 Jap defenders, only 1,000 were taken prisoner; it cost the Yanks over 15,000 casualties. This caused the Allies to estimate a million casualties in Operation Olympic, the invasion of mainland Japan - hence the use of two atomic bombs.
