Seems the NUT are upset with Mr Gove, but I'm rather puzzled as to why?  If he's promoting the idea of "a back to basics" curriculum, that enables ALL kids to have sufficient knowledge of reading, writing and arithmetic to make them employable - what's the problem?

Can anyone point to any announcement ever by a government minister about education which did NOT upset the NUT? Just saying.

One thing I did notice about the "back to basics " approach was time tables, no problem with that - but up to 12 x 12. Does Govie still think that ?the norm is to sell things in dozens or that we have a coinage system with 12 pennies in a shilling?

The thing about the times tables (and all the rest - ounces/pounds/stones/quarters/ etc learned by rote) is that it exercises the brain in a way which pressing the buttons on a keyboard doesn't. It also makes it easier when doing mental arithmetic when your calculator batteries die as a side benefit!! You could extend it to 100 x 100 but that would be over egging the pudding a bit.
