Fat kids -

Seems Labour are concerned at levels of obesity amongst youngsters, and wish to reduce sugar, salt etc in the junk food they're eating - fair enough. But will they also be legislating to remove the fear of peadophiles, so the kids can start playing out? Will they be legislating for the amount of time kids spend on X-boxes, PC games and TV? Will they be providing more school playing fields and encouraging participation in sport? Will they be fining the parents for child abuse, for feeding them junk in the first place? :|

They aren't really concerned. They are just being their usual political prodnose selves, trying to micromanage our lives. Perhaps if they (politicians of all persuasions) did what they were supposed to be doing instead of interfering in our lives we wouldn't be

But micro-management of our lives isn't what they were elected to do!! The problem is that most of our rules and regulations come directly from Brussels leaving our politicians nothing to do except meddle in things that don't concern them. The devil makes work for idle hands. Sack the lot of them!!

Ah another government plot to shift the gaze of the gullible onto the trivialities and away from the foibles of the elected elite.

Or to put it another way, if people are ranting on about their "micro managing" the populace then they are not concentrating on the expenses fiddles etc.

No doubt, the threat is real, we're apparently the second highest in the world for obesity related illness (diabetes etc); and this constitutes a future fiscal time bomb. The question is, will the politicians actually take the range of measures required now, or just wring their hands until it becomes a crisis?

One thing they are doing is making ot easier to lower speeds on residential roads. But they need to make it even easier and we all need to respect more the people who do walk or cycle whenever they can.

Don't really want to resurect the 20mph debate Rod - BUT: cycling "on the roads" is totally unsafe, regardless of traffic speeds.  Just one example to make the point:  HGV(artic) waiting at traffic lights to turn left,  indicators on, checks nearside mirror - clear - begins manoevre on green. Cyclist having overtaken line of traffic, nips behind lorry and begins to undertake it.  HGV driver is now blind to his n/side as his cab and mirror are angled, so cyclist gets caught under trailer wheels - the HGV driver is probably oblivious. This has happened on many occasions, and indeed a campaign by the mother of a cyclist killed in this way, campaigned for HGV.s to be fitted with wide angled mirrors and proximity warning sensors - but these type of accidents occure at less than 20mph and demonstrate the incompatibility of these different modes on the same road space. Thus, the safest place for cyclists is on the pavement.  About 50 years ago, most kids either walked or cycled to school,  played more organised sport, played out of the house (without knowledge or fear of peadophiles), and spent less time in front of the TV and possibly consumed a more frugal diet - alas that was in the days of a lot less traffic.
