algy
This is the only photo I can find of the rear of the "Golden Ball", incidentally its correct name was "The New Golden Ball" as there had been another pub in Winwick Street called the "Old Golden Ball", the photo was taken from Turner Street in the early 1980's, I believe the pub was demolished around 1988

Davy51
Amazing how much that area has changed. The tall building opposite is still there as offices ...that used to be the old co-op offices & attached to that at the back was a large co-op warehouse. The middle part of the photo with the lower looking roof is now a car wash.
peridot1
Sorry to hi-jack this thread but as we are talking about American haunts in Warrington, does anyone know whether it is true thet Rocky Marciano was stationed at Burtonwood and learnt some of his fighting skills in the Seven Stars in Bridge Street? peridot1
The Shannon and Chesapeake definitely existed and was the oldest pub in Warrington bar the Barley Mow. It was flattened to make the sharp left bend where the road turns just beyond what was the Co-op Hall and just before Bill Popes. I collected insurance premiums there and some of the old bar fittings were still in evidence as well as the counter itself.I have asked for information on the site before but got no response. Sounds like an American Railroad company, I have the names of all the pubs and hotels in Warrington going back to the early part of the 1800's and that doesn't appear in it and the same with directories. the name Chesapeake originates from a tribe of Indians in the USA so I would have thought it unlikely that an old English pub would be named after them. I would really be interested to know exactly where it was and how old it was.
algy
Here's a list of pubs in the Warrington area from 1759 to 1895, I'm afraid the list may not be conclusive, however I compiled it with the only information I had at that time. Unfortunately the list does not present itself in it's original format of separate columns and I have not the time or inclination to arrange it so on here, to those that are interested - read on, to those who are not - 'tough'. WARRINGTON & DISTRICT, HOSTELRIES, HOTELS, INN’S & PUBLIC HOUSES & TAVERNS ETC. Drinking and drinking places have been regulated for a very long time, but the modern system of licensing dates back to 1552, when concerns over public order led to magistrates being given the power to license alehouses. Generally speaking, they acted to control the number and conduct of drinking places in the interests of the community – and for the most part that was restrictive. From the middle of the 19th century restrictions were placed on the opening hours of licensed premises. The Wine and Beerhouse Act 1869 reintroduced the stricter controls of the previous century. The sale of beers, wines or spirits required a licence for the premises from the local magistrates. Further provisions regulated gaming, drunkenness, prostitution and undesirable conduct on licensed premises, enforceable by prosecution or more effectively by the landlord under threat of forfeiting his licence. Licences were only granted, transferred or renewed at special Licensing Sessions courts, and were limited to respectable individuals. Often these were ex-servicemen or ex-policemen; retiring to run a pub was popular amongst military officers at the end of their service. Licence conditions varied widely, according to local practice. They would specify permitted hours, which might require Sunday closing, or conversely permit all-night opening near a market. Typically they might require opening throughout the permitted hours, and the provision of food or lavatories. Once obtained, licences were jealously protected by the licensees (always individuals expected to be generally present, not a remote owner or company), and even "Occasional Licences" to serve drinks at temporary premises such as fêtes would usually be granted only to existing licensees. Objections might be made by the police, rival landlords or anyone else on the grounds of infractions such as serving drunks, disorderly or dirty premises, or ignoring permitted hours. 1759 to 1768 Boars Head Town Hill Nancy Dutton The Crow Inn Bridge Street Jasper Houghton Red Lion Winwick Street Jacob Rule The Pear Tree Inn Church Street Enoch Millington Legs ‘O’ Man School Brow William Howard The Hare & Hounds Town hill William Hesketh The Old Blue Back Heathside Jacob Ellerwell 1788 to 1792 The Anchor Inn The Black Horse The Boars Head Duke of York The Glass House The Hole in the Wall Lion Inn Marquis of Granby Queen Charlotte Queens Head The Punch Bowl The Partridge Inn Rose & Three Crowns The Sun Inn 1818 Angel Inn Bridge Street Peter Joynson The Angel Inn Bridge Street James Dayley The Bull Horsemarket Street James Milnes Blue Lion Market Square Eliza Stark Leigh Arms Market Square (place) George Jones Mermaid Inn Bridge Street Samuel Harrison Nelson Tavern Buttermarket Street William Handley Rope & Anchor Buttermarket Street John Chester Star Inn Bridge Street William Lowe St Patrick Buttermarket Street Mrs Ellis White Horse Rose & Crown Street Jasper Ellison Rose & Three Crowns 1823 Admiral Lord Rodney Winwick Street John Gerrard Barley Mow Market place Joshua Perrin Bay Horse Winwick Street Gordon Gerrard Bears Paw 3 Buttermarket street R Harvey Black Bear Latchford John Holmes Blackburn Arms Cornmarket George Fearnley Boars Head Town Hill Edward Dutton Bowling House (Green) Bank Quay, Sankey John Shelmerdine Bridge Tavern Latchford William Hesketh Brittania Inn 2 Scotland Road Sarah Shelmerdine Brown Cow Market place D Rowland Bulls Head 32/36 Church Street Jane Hope Bulls Head 121 Church Street Rodney Yates Cheshire Cheese Inn Latchford James Pierpoint Cock Inn 7 Bridge Street John Travers Coopers Arms 5 Bewsey Street John Wagstaff Crown & Sceptre 10 Buttermarket Street Jonathan Mather Curriers Arms 12 Buttermarket Street Sam Astilles Feathers 96 Bridge Street John Wright Fleece Inn Buttermarket Street J Tollet Fox – The Old 8 Buttermarket Street Sarah Wheatley General Wolfe 84 Church Street William Woods Golden Ball Winwick Street Tom Naylor Golden Grove 10 Lyme Street William Bickerstaff Golden Horse Shoe 31 Horsemarket Street Tom Malley Green Dragon 26 Bridge Street Walter kay Griffin Inn 42 Horsemarket Street John Lingard Higher Angel 25 Buttermarket Street W Milnes Hope & Anchor Buttermarket Street James Chester Hop Pole 49 Horsemarket Street W England Horse & Crown Bridge Street Robert Bunston Kings Arms 50 Buttermarket Street Sam Taylor Leigh Arms Market Place Tom Higginson Lamb Bridge Street Joe Bowden Little Horse Shoe 30 Horsemarket Street Henry Eadie Lord Nelson 78 Buttermarket Street W Handley Lower Angel 27 Buttermarket Street J Leather Marquis of Grandby 64 Church Street Johnson Clarke Millstone Inn (Tavern) 56 Sankey Street Mary Hayes Millstone Golborne Street John Jackson Norton Arms Latchford P Ashton Oak & Lion Market place Thomas Parker Old Coffee House 13 Horsemarket Street Jos Croughton Old Crow 3 Fennel street Thomas Ashton Old Golden Ball 121 Winwick Street Sarah Wilcock Packet House 134 Bridge Street Sam Eyton Ring ‘O’ Bells 166 Church Street Margaret Pennington Roe Buck Bridge Street James Hatton Rose & Crown Bridge Street Thomas Leftwich Royal exchange 5 Cheapside, Market Place John Bradshaw Golden Square Royal oak 109 Bridge Street Ann Harrison Severn stars Bridge Street George Clarke Ship Bridge Street Joe Clarke Ship Inn Bank Quay T Crossier Ship Winwick Street Anne Laithwaite Ship Lower Walton W Beswick Spinners Arms Bridge Street G Starky Star & Garter Bridge Street Joe Worrel Swan 15 Bridge Street Jasper Barrow Theatre Tavern Scotland Road J Scott Three Crowns Market Place P Thomas Unicorn Market Place Ben Jameson Union Coffee House Union Street Tom Fletcher Waggoners Inn Buttermarket Street P Sumner Wheatsheaf 4 Buttermarket Street John Taylor White Bear Inn 114 Bridge Street J Warham White Bull 38 Horsemarket Street James Milnes White Heart 19 Market place R Hatton White Heart 76 Sankey Street J Burbora Woolpack Inn 51 Sankey Street W Broadhurst 1825 From a Lancashire Directory of that year. Evil Sid
Quite an interesting list. Can't help wondering if the manx arms was formerly the leg 'o' man. Also wondering why they would name a tennis player after a pub in warrington

Davy51
It would be surprising to see how much work the townsfolk actually got through with all those pubs to spend their time in.I am surprised Cunninghams is not on any of the brewery lists unless it didn't start up till later. peridot1
Hi Algy Re the Shannon and Chesapeake it was on Winwick Road near to Bill Popes on the Co-op Hall side. Bearing in mind it's over thirty years since I called there my best re-collection is that it was where the lights are coming from the old Alliance Boxworks towards the Halliwell Jones Stadium and would probably have been more or less opposite the Brewery gates when they were there. It was partly a shop/newsagents and had a sign above outlining the history of the site. How much of the building was original I do not know. I would have called there in the late 1970s but the building was much older. I have seen mention of it in a book, possibly Warrington and the Mid - Mersey Valley by G. A. Carter. Peridot Peri, I owe you an apology, I have just found a site detailing <http://www.chesapeakemill.co.uk/brokememoirsN.pdf> HMS Shannon's capture of the USS Chesapeake 1st June 1813, and there were a number of pubs around England called "The Shannon and Chesapeake" in commemoration of the event, although at the moment I have no information of the pub in Winwick Road. Davy51
Apparently, the present day Chesapeake Mill in Wickham ,Hants was built in 1820 using timbers from the recently dismantled Chesapeake & replaced an earlier mill.
algy
Thing that has me 'miffed' is that in the Warrington Directory of 1825 there is no mention of the pub in it whereas all the others are listed, and it's only twelve years after the battle. peridot1
No need for apology Algy and you are correct in what you say about the sea battle. I did find another site called groups yesterday afternoon by Googling Shannon and Chesapeake which mentions the Warrington pub but doesn't give much information about it. I can't offer an explanation as to why it does not appear in the 1825 list unless it had closed as a pub by then and been partly demolished and rebuilt. Tha sign did mention that the then existing building was on the site of the S & C and that part of the building had been incorporated. There were remnants of the bar in one of the rooms.I'm not sure who I was working for at the time - probably Prudential. I remember people paying in pools money there too. Algy I know its a long time after the original posts but better late than never. The S & C was listed in the Warrington Guardian 26 Aug 1854 as a licensed beer house. It operated until the late 19th century. Later it became a shop and was run by a Mrs Daglish in later years. It was compulsorily purchased in 1975 and was subsequently demolished as part of the A49 diversion programme. I did try to put a picture on here but unfortunately baffled by technology. algy
Wire thanks for the information, I have added the text below from two of the directories I have and it confirms exactly what you have said, until now I never considered it to be a Beer retailers, thanks again for the info. In Worrals 1871 Directory there is no mention of the S & C, however in the list of Beer Retailers there is only one retailer listed for Winwick Rd and that is James Gregory, on the right hand side of Winwick Rd 1895 Slater's Directory again makes no reference to the S & C, but Job Hampton is listed as residing at 69 Winwick Rd as the only Beer Retailer in Winwick Road, the address is on the right hand side of Winwick Rd on the town side of Oliver St. It looks more than likely that the Shannon & Chesapeake Inn had been down graded to a Beer Retailing Shop selling beer for consumption off the premisses, in other words an outdoor license as they were later known. Wire, was this the picture you were referring to.
