Davy51
Did anyone see the BBC news article in which the government in its wisdom is asking companies to pay employees at least £1 per hour more than the national minimum wage ? Apparently it is too easy for NMW recipients to claim benefits to top up their earnings & the hope is that these newly "enriched " earners will have some spare cash in their pockets to spend in the High Street.Apparently another government target will be the part time workers who refuse more hours in case it disqualifies them from benefits. I wonder with this great realisation that the minimum wage is inadequate to sustain the economy ,will the government now lift the state pension to a similar level , perhaps £280 /week ? Somehow i think not !!
asperity
If the tax threshold were raised to the level of the minimum wage, then anyone earning the minimum wage would automatically have more to spend by dint of not having any tax deducted. Employers paying £1 an hour more would just increase tax revenue.
