Cleopatra
I used to drink (Extra)Stout mixed (stout/mild) in the Appleton Thorn from 1957 0nwards. Used to manage around 10 pints in those days. Full after 3 or 4 pints of the black stuff these days. Were those the days when beer was only tenpence a pint? algy
Were those the days when beer was only tenpence a pint? Not absolutely sure but in 1960 I think I used to pay 1/- and 4d (about 8p in todays washers) for a pint of brown mixed at the Rams Head in Grappenhall village
Cleopatra
Remember the days when the drays would deliver the big wooden barrels of beer to the pubs. They would open up the cellar's hatch doors in the pavement then lower the barrels into the cellar using two ropes. That was a skill in it's own right. If one rope was slackened more than the other one the barrel would be in danger of tipping at one end and sliding off the ropes. It fascinated me watching them being delivered. Only once (though possibly it might have happend more frequently) saw a barrel crash to the cellar floor. It was already too close to the floor to have done any real damgage but I can still remember the stream of blue language that ascended from the depths of the cellar and someone calling down,"Mind your language there are kiddies up here!" Strange the things you remember, eh what?
