Mary
Campaigners for a referendum on the European Union's controversial Lisbon Treaty claim they have overwhelming public support. The I Want A Referendum Campaign said that in unofficial mini-referendums which it ran in 10 parliamentary constituencies, 88% voted in favour of a full-blown referendum on the treaty. The campaign said that 152,520 people voted in the polls, of whom 133,251 voted for a referendum. The announcement of the results came as MPs prepare to vote on Wednesday on whether to hold a referendum for real. In addition to the main question, voters were also asked if the UK should approve the EU's Lisbon Treaty. Of those who voted, 89% voted against and 8% voted in favour, with 3% not answering. asperity
The government won't give us a referendum because they know that the vote will be against them.
Jackored7
if we had a referendum calling for zero taxes people would vote for it obviously but the country would be in a financial mess pretty quickly.
asperity
As if the country isn't in a financial mess already??
Jackored7
so you would or wouldn't vote for zero taxes Asperity?
asperity
Given that the question would never be asked I can't see what you're getting at.
observer
So on that basis, the Plebs shouldn't be allowed to vote at all! However the reality is, that folk used to have a choice between a low and a high tax Party, and they didn't always vote for the one.
Lt Kije
Better in than out, yes the Eu needs to be changed but we are in a better place to change it from within, most of UKs trade is within the EU
Robbo
I have little trust in the British public voting for the right thing in any referendum or election
observer
Eh Kije; 88% seems quite a high figure, what you might call a majority - so if the EU and this Government are sooo democratic - hows about a referendum?! As for "most of our trade being with the EU" - WELL OF COURSE, that's what "the club" is all about.
