algy
One of my all time favourites - 'Blinded by the Light' but never could understand the lyrics, here they are under the video. Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night Madman drummers bummers, Indians in the summer with a teenage diplomat In the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps his way into his hat With a boulder on my shoulder, feelin' kinda older, I tripped the merry-go-round With this very unpleasin', sneezin' and wheezin, the calliope crashed to the ground The calliope crashed to the ground But she was... Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, runner in the night Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night Some silicone sister with a manager mister told me I go what it takes She said "I'll turn you on sonny to something strong, play the song with the funky break" And go-cart Mozart was checkin' out the weather chart to see if it was safe outside And little Early-Pearly came by in his curly-wurly and asked me if I needed a ride Asked me if I needed a ride But she was... Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night Blinded by the light She got down but she never got tired She's gonna make it through the night She's gonna make it through the night But mama, that's where the fun is But mama, that's where the fun is Mama always told me not to look into the eye's of the sun But mama, that's where the fun is Some brimstone baritone anticyclone rolling stone preacher from the east Says, "Dethrone the dictaphone, hit it in it's funny bone, that's where they expect it least" And some new-mown chaperone was standin' in the corner, watching the young girls dance And some fresh-sown moonstone was messin' with his frozen zone, reminding him of romance The calliope crashed to the ground But she was... Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night Blinded by the light Madman drummers bummers, Indians in the summer with a teenage diplomat In the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps his way into his hat With a boulder on my shoulder, feelin' kinda older, I tripped the merry-go-round With this very unpleasin', sneezin' and wheezin, the calliope crashed to the ground Now Scott with a slingshot finially found a tender spot and throws his lover in the sand And some bloodshot forget-me-not said daddy's within earshot save the buckshot, turn up the band Some silicone sister with a manager mister told me I go what it takes She said "I'll turn you on sonny to something strong"
Cleopatra
I have that song myself Algy. I brings memories back of days gone by. A favourite of mine too. As for the strange lyrics.... well I think they might have been written while under the influence - if you know what I mean - like a few other songs of the period! Bill
Funny you should say that Algy, only the other day Mrs G and myself were both trying to work out what the heck they were saying. For “reved up” we heard wrapped up but it was the deuce that we couldn’t quite get. Anyhow a quick Google on the subject explains the record is certainly top of the pops when it comes to confusing people so it’s not just us! Jean
The lyrics and tune were written by Bruce Springsteen most definatly under the influence, but I do like the Mannfred Mann version.
Davy51
Was Bruce ever in Manfred Mann & the Earthband ? I believe Manfred was South African , is that correct ? The lyrics are as baffling as American Pie.
Cleopatra
Isn't American Pie supposed to be about the death Buddy Holly? (The day that music died) found this - Talking about how he composed this song when he was a guest on the UK show Songbook, McLean explained: "For some reason I wanted to write a big song about America and about politics, but I wanted to do it in a different way. As I was fiddling around, I started singing this thing about the Buddy Holly crash, the thing that came out (singing), 'Long, long time ago, I can still remember how that music used to make me smile.' go here - http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=1193 It gives a line by line interpretation of the words to American Pie

Mary
Blinded by the Light, to me, is Bruce's way of explaining what its like to become a big musical star. Revved up like a deuce( deuce coup - fast car). At least thats how I see it. As far as American Pie - I can relate to this song so much - I see it as how he saw the world and how it was changing around him. The sixties and early seventies, with the hippie ideal, turned out to be not what he thought it would be(nor what most people thought it would be). But these are my opinions. Peter T
Mary, how did you and others think that it would turn out? What WAS the dream?
