THE LAST OF PENKETH & SANKEY ETC. Sankey, Barrow Hall Moat. Cottage in Bewsey Lane or Road. Warrington. Thatched Cottages in an unknown location. (any suggestions would be welcome, it is definitely Warrington, unfortunately and in error I erased the title). The name over the door is "Thomas Knight", in 1895 there was a man of that name in Warrington in who's occupation was given as 'Fitter'. 1. PADGATE, FEARNHEAD, ARPLEY & WOOLSTON. An old lady gathering ears of corn from the fields on Arpley Meadows 1900. Farming life at Padgate. 1905. The Farmers Arms Fearnhead Lane. Arpley Cannons, outside Arpley Station, these were taken away and melted down as part of the war effort in WWII. Arpley Station, captured Crimean War cannons. Woolston Hall (off Hillock Lane). Tracey Bennett Posted May 5, 2012 Report Posted May 5, 2012 I think the old woman looks like she's 'gleaning', ie picking up the bits left after the main harvest. Peasants used to have the right to go over the fields like this after the farmer had done his main harvest and keep the food to supplement their diet. Quote
