getting back to topic...

The Libyan authorities have apparently apologised after the 'video footage emerged showing graves of British servicemen being vandalised by armed men in Benghazi' and have said they are stepping up patrols to protect the graves from further damage.

Very nice but how on earth can you protect graves, lives or anything else form radical extremists.

Surely the video footage itself, which is still being show by news channels after the militants posted their self filmed footage on the web, is just adding even more 'fuel to the fire'.

Maybe if videos like this were promptly removed (where possible) from whatever source they are uploaded too or if others sources like the press/youtube etc refused to show them then the militants would not get the coverage they so clearly desire.

I guess that would not sell papers though but in my opinion the press are just supplying these idiots with an endless amount of free fuel to keep their fire burning for years

Same goes for the quaran burning... many of the images from that were appauling and included kids with bloodied faces or cowering behind walls whilst at the same time others hurling bricks and carrying guns.

The word has gone completely bonkers

What do you expect? Your dealing with folk with a mind set from the 7thC, and if these ignorant throwbacks ever get their hands on a nuke delivery system - the games up for us all.

As much as I hate to agree with you Obs (although I would not have used those terms) it does seem that sooner or later it will probably come to that.

It is clearly what many of these people spend their whole lives striving to achieve from a very early age and, for whatever reasons, they will never give up or change their views no matter how much intervention or so called help is offered to them.

They have been born, bred, brainwashed and grown up with those views and within a society surrounded with these very same beliefs and as such they know nothing else.

Very sad in some ways that kids and adults alike can live with such hatred and beliefs in their bones and very worrying we are their targets through no fault of our own either.

Maybe we should have just left them all too it and not got involved in the first place as it's done no good anyway, but I guess it's far to late for that now.

Here's a (1st!) link to the story under discussion, and it suggests that the prime suspects are a group of "Islamist militia".

Bunch of nutters, 'nuff said.

Oh, and kevo, have a word with yourself fella, we're trying to have a SERIOUS discussion here:

youngsters can access this forum

Youngsters can access practically anything on the web. Like Bill says, do you think they're at all interested in this kind of stuff against what's available out there?

Observer

I think your taking a very narrow and short term view of the situation there. Change doesn’t happen overnight and especially so when it comes to long held beliefs that have existed for centuries but change is happening and it’s probably for the good.

In my experience of meeting people from other countries I find they’re much the same as us with the same concerns and aspirations for the future and most if not all of the problems are due to the counties politics.

Continue offering help and support and eventually you be taking holidays there rather than worrying about a nuclear threat.

I can half agree with that theory of secularisation/modernisation Bill; I've no doubt that initially, the Arab Spring was stimulated by young modernists (mainly City dwellers) using the internet, who aspire to become free secular democracies rather than bigoted theocracies. Unfortunately, they are outnumbered by those of the faith. And I don't reserve my venom for Muslims either; in Israel they've got right wing Zionist extremists pushing for conflict with Muslims; and of course, we have our own Protestant v Catholic nutters over here, some of who've not learned a thing after 30 years of carnage. Ultimately, the only way to deal with this is to secularise all public institutions and social life, which means turning off the educational tap that produces this outdated nonesense, and to cease this liberal nonesense of pandering to folk who wish to lead parrallel cultures within society, rather than being assimilated into it.

The wisest words I have read so far and from Dizzy.

There have been one or two, maybe a few, references to being stuck in the 7th century. I wonder what centuary you would be stuck in (maybe the 1st) were it not for the inventions of the Egyptians? Do you realise the number of things in every day use and taken for granted without further thought have their origins in Egypt? Here are just a few :-

Inventions relating to building include:

The Pyramids, the development of tools to ensure a level base and the development of mortar and cement

Producing custom-made bricks all of the same size to ensure the fast building of the capital of Akhetaten built in just 7 years by the heretic king Akhenaten, the father of Tutankhamen

Arched ceilings developed by shaving the corners off stones to produce a vaulted structure

Obelisks

Man-made canals in order to transport building materials to the great building sites

The extensive use of rope made from hemp in construction techniques

Surveying techniques

Tunnelling techniques

Scaffolding

Inventions relating to the use of metal include:

Knowledge of human anatomy acquired from the mummification and embalming process

The identification and naming of internal and external body parts

The development of various surgical instruments

Surgical techniques

The practise of using specialists for treating specific ailments relating to the head, eyes, ears, the stomach and fertility. This also included dentists

Scoff as much as you like but the inventions of the ancient Egyptians include many that are essential to today's modern world.

Where would you be without the wheel for instance? Still walking or maybe riding horses. :D

So, we are flying rockets now....humm....How will it benefit you or I if a man is landed on mars  What benefit has been gained by man landing on the moon? Zilch! You will be long gone, burned or rotted away in the ground, before any benefit will be gained, if ever.

What is more, governments are squandering an uncountable amount of wealth flying their rockets. Enough money to eradicate poverty all over the world - west as wll as east. <_<

There have been countless benefits of man landing on the moon, or via the technology that helped to achieve it and the advancements by NASA since the landings anyway....

we also learned that a democratic government is superior to a communist one!!

There are also a plethora of scientific facts gained about the moon; how if formed, is it still geologically active, origin of the craters, etc.

10 top space inventions:

10. Invisible Braces

9. Scratch-resistant Lenses

8. Memory Foam

7. Ear Thermometer

6. Shoe Insoles

5. Long-distance Telecommunications

4. Adjustable Smoke Detector

3. Safety Grooving on roads and runways

2. Cordless Tools

1. Water Filters

Space travel is an investment in the future Cleo.... you don't have a baby and then expect it to go out and work for its keep the following day do you? The investments made over the past 40 odd years will benefit our kids and their kids and their kids....

For goodness sake.....

This topic was about the needless desecration of War graves due to an idiotic militant revenge attack 'possibly' caused by the the burning of the quaran but more likely because idiots like them like to do things like that for 'fun' or whatever reason they like to call it.

...and then the topic suddenly turned to how the Egyptians invented arched ceilings, chairs, canals, scaffolding, sun dials, domesticated cats... and a whole host of other things. So what and who really cares considering what is going on in the world ??

... and then the topic changed to people landing on the moon (or was it the other way around) and god knows what else...

..... and now we are onto English lager louts. Yippee... define Britishness eh ?

Mine's a couple of strong pints please so I get the nerve to say something that I might get banned for but can;t really be blamed for as I will say I was 'under the influence'

PS Cleo I recon you are number one for knowing how to take a topic off track... and I thought I was good at it (unintentionally of course as I am thick)

Typos.. not checked... and I don't really care anyway. Night all :?:P
