wolfie
Apparently not, they`re sending one of the new type destroyers down to patrol around the Falklands. Just flexing our muscles!!!!!!!!! Ian We flexed our muscles in 1964 when a permanent detachment of Royal Marines were established on the Falklands. 3 years later there were talks with the Argentine Foreign Minister, stating Britain was prepared to forego sovereignty if assurance that the Islanders' rights and way of life would be preserved;

I would hope that the government had a little more respect and sense to start discussing handing over our sovereign territory with such an event hanging over it

Wireboy
If/when the Argies do invade again, much tougher sanctions must be enforced against them. We can't keep warring with them every 30 years or so because they just don't get it. If British soil is attacked again. Maybe we can counter by attacking Argie soil. To be honest, I think it is just Argie policital motives. Over time when an argie president has been struggling politically they just shout "Malvinas" to take the negative light away from them and to drum up support from the population. But if they do show aggression, we must show it back.
observer
Perhaps we need another Maggie, only this time the US President can allow her to nuke the Argies!
Evil Sid
so who among us are going there personally to take a hand in defending the Falklands?
algy
so who among us are going there personally to take a hand in defending the Falklands? Go on then Sid, put me' name down then, have to go by air though, I'm not a very good sailor. I'll take me' foot pump, I can check and top up the air pressure in aircraft tyres, or if you give me a land rover I can always chase penguin's off the runway. observer
SORTED - they've deployed Prince Billy over there - those nasty Argies wouldn't dare now - would they?!
Cleopatra
the United States have now moved from one of total support of Britain to one of being Neutral. No oil?

Nick Tessla
No oil? If he starts to show support for the Argies it should be suggested that he hand back Guantnamo Bay to Cuba.
observer
Well, seems we've sent a nuclear sub down there now - should keep the Argie Navy in Port!
Nick Tessla
The argies are complaining to the UN about the "militarisation" of the Falklands and in other news, burglars say they object to people installing alarms and locking their doors
observer
If they appeal to the ECHR, they may get permission to invade!
Evil Sid
only if they have filled in the appropriate risk assessment forms.
observer
Seems they've done a risk assessment: one Submarine, one destroyer and 3,000 troops, plus Prince Billy appear to be enough to deter them, and force them to go bleating to the UN! Cleopatra
It is so not right for the British to protect it's territory from would be invaders!
Bazj
Maybe we should hand them over to Argentina AND give them pots of foreign aid money to develop the oil fields out there too!

wolfie
Whatever happens, at some point there will be discussions about the ownership of the Falklands. The islanders did not object to talks in 1974, nor exclude discussions on sovereignty in 1977, nor yet reject leaseback in 1980. They do not seem to have protested when the Argentines built them a runway and provided them with medical supplies, petrol at mainland prices or free secondary education in Argentina. Easiest way to do that would be to get us out of the controlling hands of France and Germany.
wolfie
That would make him extremely popular, as would be the manager of Accrington Stanley on winning the Premiership. In other words it aint going to happen.

Bazj
As a republican; surely you too would be in favour of handing them over Nick? After all, they are a consequence of our monarchy driven, imperialistic age aren't they???
