Emoticons may be used as a shield in the event of a poster intentionally meaning to offend and knowing full well that an individual or individuals reading said post will be offended and when the poster is called to account he/she merely states that offence was not intended as he/she had added the appropriate emoticon, no difference in my opinion from someone facing you and making an offensive remark whilst having a sarcastic smile on their face. Even when you change the pic list to what they mean it doesn't always make sense to me, what on earth does 'wub' mean? Clearly you shouldn't read too much into them!!
