Cleopatra
It was only the fact that it was on a corner that made me think it was the Lord Rodney
harry hayes
The poor sods who had to live in those cottages. My relatives were just a little bit further down at the top end of Orford Lane and close to Pinners Brow. The Camp cafe place thereon was probaly Raffo's in later years - best ice-cream and parlour in town. Happy days
Cleopatra
I don't think anyone was living in them when the photo was taken Harry, they look like they were ready to fall down.
algy
I don't think anyone was living in them when the photo was taken Harry, they look like they were ready to fall down. Date of the photo is 1930, so it's possible that with the depression people may well have lived there. I'm supposed to have signed off but can't help noseying, relly is my last appearance. Goodnight all.
Wireboy
Nice to see the Lord Rodney has survived the test of time. Unlike enveything else around it. At the end of the shot after the cottages, is the the "Original Wire" pub? formaly the "Wheatsheaf" or is that pub out of shot?
Bill
I'd have thought the other pub would be just a bit further along. Just checked on Google maps and it's not the same building at all. Bill
Stallard12
God I'm hopeless at this !!! I seem to remember the Lord Rodney beigng faced in shiny brown tile. Wrong again I guess, cos that looks like old brick.
Dizzy
No idea Stallard as I didn't know where it was anyway Here's some modern day pics for you, do you remember it being anything like this ?
Peter T
How did you get the brickwork to look like that Dizzy?
algy
Looking at the old maps there is a difference in the building 'Plan view' between the map of 1928 and that of the 1937 map, so to me the old "Rodney" would have been removed and with the new "Rodney" being built around the early to mid 1930's. Cleopatra
How did you get the brickwork to look like that Dizzy? A little Mr Sheen and a lot of elbow grease.
Stallard12
Now yer cookin' Dizzy, that's the Lord Rodney I remember. I might even have gotten it, providing you left the name up there. Unbelievable, my company offices etc were just across the road and I still have trouble. I must have walked around with my eyes closed for years. Peter T
It's recently had a makeover. Don't think it looked like that years ago. Bill might know as I think he used to frequent the place with one of our other posters.
Stallard12
You may be right. It looks like it's had a lick of paint, but pretty close to what I remember. Although i will say, I seem to remember it being a little more brown Victorian tileish.
