fugtifino
Not much detail on that graph, asp, where's it from?
asperity
Here is the full article: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/02/22/manufacturing_figures/
fugtifino
Thanks, asp, I like The Register. Always knew it wasn't as bad as is often made out, hope the effects of inflation are taken into account in those figures though.
observer
As the article says, we are manufacturing niche products higher up the industrial food chain - which is precisely what we should be doing to stay ahead of the competition. BUT - this requires two elements to sustain it - 1) an highly educated and flexible workforce, so we don't have to depend on imported skills and 2) we still require the basic industries to supply/support the advanced technologies - a) to employ the less well educated and skilled, and to reduce our dependency on imports. The more sophisticated our society becomes the more vulnerable it becomes.
Ricky
Does that include the service sector? There is definitley a decline in "heavy Industry" (i.e making cars, manufacturing steel, etc) but a increase in the service sector (call centres, office based stuff, etc) If there was a massive decline in all types of industry then I darnt stroll around town in my work uniform as I would get lynched
Bazj
Does that include the service sector? err no. Its showing manufacturing output. The service sector probably works out how much manufacturing there is!!
observer
Our service sector (especially financial services) blossomed under Maggie, and we've had a disproportionate reliance on it ever since. Theres an interesting prog starting on TV next week about this subject btw.
